Sony Blu-Ray Player Drops Under $300

Sony’s BDP-S300 Blu-ray player is now available at, Best Buy and Circuit City for less than $300.

Amazon today is offering the player for $294 — and it comes with seven free Blu-ray movies: Spider-man 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End and five more Blu-ray discs via a mail-in rebate.

The price reduction for the Sony Blu-ray player comes on the heels of a similar price drop for Samsung’s BD-P1400 Blu-ray, which is now available for $279 at Amazon. The two players normally retail for around $499. However, Blu-ray supporters have been under pressure to drop prices since November when retailers began offering an entry-level Toshiba HD DVD player for around $200.

While Sony and other Blu-ray manufacturers said recently they would not get into a price war, the new price tags would suggest otherwise.

Blu-ray, backed by Sony, and HD DVD, led by Toshiba, are rival formats competing for the new high-def disc audience.

Blu-ray discs have outsold HD DVD by a 2-1 margin this year. But HD DVD has led in standalone player sales by roughly 55-45. (This does not include sales of the PlayStation 3, which has a Blu-ray player inside.) It remains to be seen if the new Blu-ray prices will cut into HD DVD’s lead in that category.
