Sony has announced that the latest firmware upgrade for its PS3 will give their games consol ‘BD live’ (Blu-ray 2.0 spec) capability.
Core functionality within ‘BD Live’ allows a disc to check online each time it is played – for new content related to the particular film. This content could be anything from movie trailers, ringtones to actor info which can then be viewed through picture-in-picture mode.
One of the more useful features ‘Resume play’ enables the PS3 system to start playing a Blu-ray or DVD at the point it was stopped, even if that disc has been removed from the player.
The PS3’s Web browser capability will be enhanced with the ability to directly stream Video files linked from a Web page – speed will also be improved. In addition, DivX and WMV format videos larger than 2GB will now be playable.
Last summer, Walt Disney announced that they would be releasing a limited number of BD Live Blu-ray titles. The discs include the animated classic, Sleeping Beauty, and Nicholas Cage’s National Treasure, which both feature web-enabled bonus material and picture-in-picture extras
