KUNITAKE ANDO (PRESIDENT AND CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER)
Kunitake Ando was named president and chief operating officer, representative director, Sony Corporation, in June 2000.
Mr. Ando has served a number of positions within Sony. Most notably, he was president and chief operating officer, Personal IT Network Company, Sony Corporation, from April 1999 to April 2000, where he engineered Sony’s successful re-entry into the personal computer market with the VAIO series of personal computers. Previous to that, he was president of the Sony’s divisional Information Technology Company since April 1996. Before launching the VAIO business, Mr. Ando was executive vice president and senior general manager, Corporate Planning, Consumer A&V Products Company, Sony Corporation from April 1994 to March 1996. Prior to that, he was president and chief operating officer, Sony Engineering and Manufacturing of America (now part of Sony Electronics Inc.) from 1990~1994.
This was his second assignment in the United States, his first being from 1976~1979 as general manager, Corporate Planning, Sony Corporation of America (now Sony Electronics Inc.).
From late 1970s through the early 1990s, Mr. Ando played key role in establishing Sony Prudential Life Insurance Co., Ltd. (now renamed Sony Life Insurance Co., Ltd.), where he was managing director from 1979~1985 and then deputy president from 1985~1990.
Mr. Ando joined Sony in 1969 after graduating from the University of Tokyo, School of Economics. His interests include golf, tennis and swimming.
