Sony Introduces Combination DVD+RW/CD-RW Drive and DVD+RW Media

New Re-writable Drive and Media Allow Users to Create Custom DVDs and CDs.

[COMDEX 2001] Sony Electronics today announced a DVD+RW drive and 4.7GB DVD+RW disc media. The new Sony DRU110A/C1 drive combines DVD+RW and CD-RW recording with DVD-ROM and CD-ROM playback in one device that can be easily installed inside a desktop PC.

The drive offers users a versatile, all-in-one device with a complete suite of software for authoring custom DVD video discs and storing/sharing large amounts of data, including digital images and original video/audio files. Sony’s new DVD+RW media (model DPW47) offers users 4.7GB of capacity or the ability to store over two hours of high quality (MPEG-2) digital video, and is an ideal companion to the new Sony DVD+RW drive. The DVD+RW discs can be re-written up to 1,000 times and are compatible with all DVD+RW recorders and most DVD-ROM drives as well as most existing consumer DVD-Video players. This enables a new level of convergence for digital video between personal computers and consumer electronics products.

“The Sony DVD+RW drive and media are ideal for both video/audio and data storage applications, and incorporate the benefits and compatibility of CD and DVD technologies,” said Toshi Naito, vice president of data storage for Sony Electronics’ Core Technology Solutions Company. “The DVD+RW format enables users to record digital video and audio from a camcorder or VCR on to a DVD+RW disc and to share their custom video with friends and family.”

The Sony DRU110/C1 drive supports up to 2.4X maximum writing speed for DVD+RW, which is equivalent to approximately 22X for CD-R/RW recording, allowing users to record about 1GB of data within five minutes. The drive also supports 12X and 10X maximum writing speeds for CD-R and CD-RW respectively.

Sony DVD+RW Software Suite

The new Sony DVD+RW drive includes a software suite that makes it easy for users to create customized DVDs and CDs for video, music and data storage. The software bundle includes:

MyDVD™ is authoring software that lets users record to DVD+RW media directly from audio and video appliances, as well as edit and customize DVDs;

B’s Clip™ is packet writing software that allows users to drag and drop files and folders to DVD+RW and CD-RW discs s as easily as to a floppy disk or hard drive;

B’s Recorder Gold™ is mastering software that lets users create back-up copies of DVDs and CDs as well as customized video, music and data DVDs and CDs from various file formats;

WinDVD™ is DVD-Video playing software that enables interactive viewing of DVD-Video discs on a PC.
