Great Fall pics Maxx!

What is that berry or seed in your last picture? It does not look familiar.

Joe- No one seems to know what kind of berry this is, but one thing is for sure and that is that good photography is all about capturing light and this mystery berry reveals that truth quite evidently.

Thanks for the reply Maxx. Now I don't feel so bad about not recognizing your berry subject. Thought it may have been something indigenous to the Portland area.

Really a huge contrast in lighting between the two photos of the mystery berry. What a difference the time of day or a cloudy can make in the picture.

Joe- You're exactly right in that lighting is so important that it can make something look berry good or berry bad!

One of the local Art Galleries has a fountain that I've posted pictures of here before and during the sub-freezing weather we've been having lately it freezes over and creates some very interesting Ice sculpture which make fore some interesting photographic abstractions.

Happy New Year 2010 to all!

The ice is long gone now, but the visual impression that it left lives on.

An early spring brings out our modern mime the Tin Man.

Thank you very much for your comment redwing-nine! This is an 1875 picture of what we now call the Pioneer Post Office. I liked the picture of the juggling mime in front of the modern Post Office because as you can see from the picture above those rock pillars have been there for well over 100 years and the photo captures him doing an excellent job of emulating them.

An early spring is busting out all over and this huge pile of large rocks didn't hinder this Purple Crocus in the least from blooming exactly one month ahead of the official beginning of spring.

As you may have noticed the of all the pictures that I have posted in both this thread and the original Sony DSC H-9 thread which is now on its 18th page have been compressed from their original 500+ KB resolution down into the 50-150 KB range which originally left me at a huge disadvantage because none of the otherwise very competent Image Management programs that I use had a sufficiently adept compression algorithm that could equal the fine results that Claudio had achieved.

Fortunately Claudio was generous enough to provide me with a license to use this dedicated jpeg compression program which is so amazingly good that I was able to produce the 117 KB compressed version below of the original 18.1 MB Lossless PNG Original with such accuracy that I can not tell them apart when viewing them on my 32" Bravia Monitor!

The picture at the top of the page is a 117 KB batch compression of the 563 KB resolution picture that I originally posted and is of a noticeably inferior quality to the amazing picture that this new jpeg compression program can produce even at a compression ratio of over 15,000%!

Thanks again Claudio for this amazing new program which can not only perfectly replicate the quality of large lossless file photos at a fraction of the original resolution, but in many cases can dramatically improve picture quality as it radically reduces file size proving that less can be more in terms of picture quality!
