I Fixed my own flash error on my sony cyber-shot dsc-s70 camera.
I Made my own kit to reset an e:91:01 flash error.
Sounds like any sony digital camera will get this permanent error if the flash fails.
So even if you replace the flash you will have to reset the error.
1st I ordered the service manual from http://servicemanuals.net/index.html
2nd I downloaded a RM95 emulator program. this program acts like/replaces the remote commander sony techs use to change settings.
http://stanza.techfocus.net/camera/rm95.zip in side the zip is the RM95EMUL.EXE and RM95DUMP.EXE
3rd I made the LanC Interface Cable on this web site http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/action/printarticle/1464
the steps above save you $200 in service tools. The cable parts cost about $12 the manual cost about $30.
I can sell you a cd copy cheaper if you have the same camera.
when you are ready plug the cable you made into the (ext flash) or (lanC) port on the sony camera.
Put your camera in play mode and turn it on. Then start the RM95DUMP.EXE program in a dos prompt.
Type (RM95DUMP.EXE>factory.txt) this will save a copy of all the setting of the camera to your pc.
Now you did that run RM95EMUL.EXE.
You will need the service manual to know what settings to change.

I had to change these addresses to unlock page d with the flash error setting.
Set address to (reset all values to default after page d is changed and saved)
    Page: 0 .address: 01,and set data: 01.
    Page: 2 .address: 03,and set data: 00.
    Page: 2 .address: 00,and set data: 2d.
    Page: 2 .address: 01,and set data: 2d.
    Page: 2 .address: 02,and set data: 01.

Cant change this setting until you change the above settings
Page: d .address: 67,and set data: 00 (if you have an error this will be 4 set it back to 0)
Write/save the new change to memory

Its funny that the above tools were made to just hack camcorders.
I spent a lot of time to get this far.
Hope this can help some people.

The programs my need to run on a win 95,98

Can someone send me a pic of what the "assembled' cable looks like. If you have a price for the CDRom manual and cable let me know. Also do you have to still replace the flash module or will this reset take care of it. Thanks! eE

This is a recipe for disaster.
Those who didn't make a cable consider yourself lucky, it's better to have a broken flash than broken camera.
Following these instructions results in permanent "low battery" sign after power up, then camera shuts down in few seconds.
Recovery procedure is possible, but is very hard and requires desoldering and reprogramming of EEPROM chip.
The emergency button in DVin program is supposed to recover from this on video camera, but it doesn't work for S70 camera.

That is not true, and it is EASY to come out of that. It goes into that mode after you alter the check sum to an unfriendly setting. If you do not raise the size of the picture you can capture, you will NOT have any check sum errors, and will not send the camera into protection.

If you do create a check sum error, it takes about 2 minutes eliminate the error and get back to business.

There is NO way to break the camera by programming.

I fixed my cameras flash error, expanded my shutter speeds, and expanded my F stops, and my camera has been taking pictures happily ever since.

here is one I took last week with my modded camera:

Desoldering? Are you on crack? Send me your camera and I will repair it for a small fee, heh.

    Dan,
Just follow original instructions and you will see.
You could possibly get out of that state with Sony cable, but not with homemade LANC cable.
Otherwise tell me how to do that, I am curious. I've seen instructions for video cameras, but they don't work.
And I did have to do eeprom hotswapping since I had no other options available.
I don't need help anymore, I already recovered it by my method.
Next, I followed exact steps from service manual and cleared flash error successfully.

Your mods are actually very interesting, I don't have a camera to try, but you can post mods, if that's not a big sectret.
I do remember a site with info about this, but again the key here is not to kill camera accidently.

I used a home made cable for all of my mods/repairs.

The home made cable was used to play with the settings to see what I did to create the check sum errors, and repaired the "dead camera" code no less than 10 times with the home made cable.

BTW this is what you need to do to reset your camera out of "dead camera":

If the camera goes in lock state (battery indicator flashing):

You need to force the cameraback to life changing:

     Address 01 on page 00 from 0 to 1
Address 1b on page 02  from 03 hex to 00 (or 02 in pal)
Then reset the original values on page 0d...

OK, I will try that recovery procedure next time, but I hope I won't need it.
Actually I also had to put back original values from 0d page after hotswapping to get it back to normal.
BTW, what program did you use to send values?
The battery sign flashes for few seconds and you have to send commands real quick.
    With rm95 I don't think it's possible.

    It is possible with rm95.

Make the changes in rm95, turn camera on, and when it is done powering up, send first value.

Do the same thing again for the next value, and so on.

Take your time, it works in rm95, and works perfectly.

The 2.5mm jack has 3 connections, how do you utilise the 3 connections when using a 2 conductor co-axial cable? Please explain, regards Michael.

    I have a Sony DSC-T1 camera, and I have E:91:01 problem,too.

I have read the instruction above, and also research the LanC cable. But I found that the 2.5mm jack of LanC cable maybe not fit the AV port of the Camera Dock. On my camera, there is no port except the port connecting to the Dock. On the dock, there is USB port, DC In port, and AV out port.

I think that the AV Out port on the Dock fit 3.2mm jack, not 2.5mm.

What do u think about this problem?

PS: can someone who has bought the service manual of Sony post it here? I don't have enough money to buy it.
