I have read that the contrast or picture should be turned down to around 50% when adjusting your tv. I use Avia to adjust my 60XBR800 , but I still end up with a level of roughly 70% for viewing at night. Does this have anything to do with the high contrast screen?

Check out this thread to calibrate that set. The rules that apply to CRT sets are not all applicable to LCD.
