there is a button on the back of my dvd player, that says selectable, interlace or progressive, i have a 40xbr800, should i switch it to selectable or progressive?

It's up to you. With selectable, you can switch between the two via the player's menu. With progressive, the output is always progressive. You should be using a progressive out most of the time, but with selectable, you can compare the two picture easily.

Only use progressive if you are using the component out - not S-Video or Composite.
BTW - I have the same DVD player and a 40XPR700 and just love the picture
