Got this from someone who was sick of the failing lcd panel. I have "repaired" the panel a couple times already by applying pressure on the flat cable. I was going to do it again today, when it didn't turn on and flashed red light 5 times. I noticed I forgot to take the metal clips that clamp the metal frame to the lcd off. It could have shorted something on the panel's board (the one that runs along the top inside the panel). I hope not. I plug it in, green light stays on for 30 secs. no picture, can't tell if the backlight is on, I have the back off, but I can't see any. Which is weird, even if I shorted something on the panel, the backlight should still turn on, right? Then turns off and gives me 3 blinks at first then sets of 5. I am also an electronics tech as a profession, this is embarrassing and usually doesn't happen. But we're all human and we all make mistakes. Most of my tools are at work, even my DMM so I can't check anything till tomorrow. My question is does anyone know what 5 blinks might mean, hopefully not the panel Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

For the KDL52XBR5, 5 blinks, pause, 5 blinks, etc. means "TCON Error". The TCON board is attached to the LCD panel and is included with a new LCD panel along with the Inverter board. I suspect that the ribbon cable is connected to the TCON board.
For the KDL52XBR5, 3 blinks, pause, 3 blinks, etc. means "Power Error".
Well, you were right. There is a fuse on T-CON that is blown, and I don't see other shorts. I'll be replaceing the fuse tomorrow evening, hopefully it's just that.
As for the backlight: I'm positive it does not turn on, I'll give you some news on that as well tomorrow.
Hello My Name is Wayne and I have a similiar problem. On a 40" Sony Bravia.
At first there were 13 blinks. I took off the back and lcd screen, turned on and saw that the 8th bulb was not lit. Ordered from ccfl warehouse and replaced the bulb. Turned it on and all the bulbs lit. Thought I was in good shape then. Put everything back together and turned on,but nothing ? Didn't think I screwed anything up. Took apart several times to check it out and still nothing. Not even the backlighting. Did I blow a fuse or something? Now I am getting the 5 blinks. Have checked the ribbon cable several times.

Replaced a 5A fuse on the T-con board and everything turned on.
So, a T-con error will stop the backlight from lighting up, for future reference
Back to repairing the lcd panel, hahaha this poor tv, I won't let it die!
I am new here and seek some help and advise please help if you guys can. I have KDL-52XB5 and I am having trouble. When turn on nothing came up on the screen and the sony light and the stand by light kept blinking and if left on like that the everything starts to work some time after 5 minutes and some time after 30mins and some time more. We kept on using it as is since never got chance to search online about trouble. But now it will not come on at all even after leaving it on for more then hour. the stand by light (green) and the pic light (red) the blinks on and off . After I read this post I turn the tv back on and timed the blinks and it looks like 5 blinks and 3 second interval and again five blinks. So does this mean Tcon is bad? About the blink time I am little not sure some times it feels like it keeps blinking for 10 x's without any brief interval so i need some help. I am electronics savy and do lots of repair work on SMD components and I still need some help since this situation feels weird. Any help would be appreciated.
Someone has KDL52XBr5 Schematics I would really appreciate it.
