I had this unit for 10 years from some one else. It started acting up about 6 years ago. Always left side sound cut off by itself in middle or from start. Solution? Very simple: bang it hard it will recover or just turn the vilume louder finally it will pop out. Sometimes it will start will shreiking small noise, same solution (usually bang hard) will do. 2 years agoo the display went off. I opened it and saw the charred area with the resistor reduced to ashes, replaced it with larger watts and it came back to life. Frome time to time, the power button didn't response, had to use remote to turn on/off, and turnit off, mid-night it would turn on by itself with large hiss on some unknown radio frequency which I never tuned to ( I never listen to radio, always use for amplifier). It always has it ghost mind. Solution? Just plug in and out instead of power buttoning.
From a week ago, the left channel finally quit, no bang can wake it up from dead. I plugged in headset, same thing. So it must from final stage of amplifier. I know this is common problem of 1070, just can't fine the real cause and source here. checked pc board, seemed all the solder are OK. Any idea? any help would be much appreciated

Sorry for the late reply. because I have totally lost my memory ---- I had used another name and posted here in 2006 and how can I totally forgot. That time my left channel was in bang and through mode, but now it's dead. that time I diplay blacked out --- thank to John, I replaced it with 1/2 w 220 ohm resistor and it came to life as charm. I remembered discussed about the bad STK3122III so these two days I just went through all my old posts and others, then I believed it's that IC701 problem and I just ordered from online.
But today, I checked the voltage on STK3122III output pins: as per the data sheet pin 5,6 and pin 10,11 supposedly have and vcc. However, I measure with power on is pin 5 and 11 has negative -1.17 -1.19V while pin 6 and pin 10 have positive 1.15-1.17v. whether I have signal or not (that means in radio live station tuner mode or empty cd mode). for the ac, pin 6 and 10 have 1.8- 2.0v in both modes, and 0 voltage in pin 5 and 11. I don't what that means: so it means the IC701 is Ok? so the problem is after that stage?
Are you sure you do not have a bad solder joint somewhere? Have you tried connecting the speakers to the B outputs? I have come across similar Sony amps with bad joints and will behave as you describe. In my experience, a bad STK module will either give a very distorted output or cause a PROTECTION error...
No. I tried on A or B are the same and even head phone. They all have no sound on left channel.
So who can tell the next step to check? If the voltages on the outputs of IC701 are normal, then the problem is with in the stage after it to the cable point om PC board because I checked from speaker posts to the PC board solder points connections are OK. I have only mutimeter to test, so who can point me the next step?

Why are you talking about IC701 when it applies to the rear channels? IC501 applies to the front channels. According to the schematic, the voltages appearing on the pins should be as follows"
Sony A/V System: KDL-55XBR8, BDP-S550 and AVD-LA2500PKG, consisting of AVD-C70ES Super Audio CD/DVD Receiver, 4 SS-LA500ED surround speakers, 1 SS-LAC505ED center channel speaker and 1 SA-WD200 Active Subwoofer
If the channel is completly dead, then it could be the STK moudule, I've had to replace one in one of my receivers. The main speaker output also feeds the headphones. If all the key solder joints are ok, then, if I was in this situation, would try a new STK module. I am not an expert, so take my advice at your own risk.
Sorry for delayed reply. I typed out reply several hours ago, but the site just can't load the mesage.
Problem solved. I did a goole search and found a guy got exact same problem. It found the solder problem just as sonyesolver guessed. I checked the solder points, all were shiny and seemed perpect. Then I turned on radio, and used chopstick to push the two big capacitors top, sure enough, the left channel came to life, I pushed the relay top it same pop up, though I had to push harder than the guy using "leaf" strength. I figured the heat at that area loose the solder maybe flux could help eroded the solder, but on the surface, you can almost see nothing wrong. I reflowed the two capacitors joints and the four replay points, and everything is ok now. the left channel is perfect now. I beleive this is common problem in AV1070X and similair series, hope this would help. However, I have ordered a STK3122III and seemed can prepare for future.
Here, I really appreciate John and sonyeslover,s help
