They look similar from the outside, but the 7000 looks a lot more crowded inside! Maybe they consolidated more of the components in the S7700? No copper on the S7000? I Liked my 7700 and should have kept it, but I have a bad disease called Sellitities Panicis...

I've got a line on a 'S7700 that seems to be in good condition that I should be able to get next week. I'll finally get to do a head-to-head comparison with a 'S7000 and the 'S7700.

The top of the case can use a little clean up, otherwise she's a beaute just like it's older sibling.

I bought the 7700 when it came out ($999 - Ouch!).  Why 7700 over 7000?  The DVP-S7000 could not read DTS encoded DVDs.  I believe that the DVP-S7700 was Sony's first DTS enabled unit.

If there is a simple DIY fix for a "stuck" front panel on my DVP-S7000, I'd like to hear about it.  I plays great but just looks a little sad in appearance when it's off.  As I've mentioned elsewhere, examining the innards makes me nervous and I don't have any special tools with which to attempt a repair.  I'm not sure that I'd even trust a local authorized SONY repairman due to its age.

    Advantages to the DVP-S7000.

    1. Can pass blacker than black.
    2. Does not have the chroma upsampling bug.
    3. Servicing the disc drive is easier due to better accessibility.

    Advantages to the DVP-S7700

    1. Supports DTS DVDs.
    2. Built on a copper chassis.

Advantages to both over lesser DVD players:

    1. Gibraltar anti-resonance material used on the chassis and disc drive tray.

    2. Dual power supplies with linear supply for the analog output employing an R-core transformer.

    3. Robust disc drive with KHS-180A dual lens optical pickup and brushless spindle motor.

    4. Excellent analog outputs.

    5. Very responsive on DVD menus and to playback controls.

    6. Supports MPEG Video CD.
