Morning chaps, hope you're all well. As the title, i have a 4-5 year old TV that seems to be in its death throws! Symptoms are once you turn it on at the wall it tries to turn on, the green light coms on straight away, no red stand by light. Theres no picture, no sound and about every 9 seconds you can hear a relay dropping out and back in again and the green light flickers for a split second. The buttons on the top dont do anything and neither does the remote.
I've not managed to locate the service manual, but have one for the previous model. It didnt help!
Am I looking at a new TV or is it recoverable?
Enjoy your Sunday!

Does the green light stay on or does it flash in the same rythm as the relay clicks?
Did you notice some strange lines of digital noise in the picture lately?

Green light stays on and flashes once with the relay clicks. Up until failure the TV was working fine with no noticeable loss of audio or distortion of picture. It just failed one morning and has been like it ever since!

There is a common seen problem with two diodes in the standby power supply unit for this chassis, but mostly the green LED flashed then.
However, I would start with checking the voltage and stability of the +5VSTDBY rail, or simply replace these two diodes.
If the problem is not in the standby PSU, I think that the video-RAM IC could be the problem.
This is a BGA-IC, which only could be replaced by means of a BGA soldering machine.
If you send an email to tv(at)techie(dot)com, I can give you the link to the service manual.

Emailed, many thanks. Is the video-RAM IC board common to any more models? I'd expect sony to charge me the cost of a new TV for one direct!

Link to manual emailed.
The video-RAM is IC5500 on the BE-board.
The BE-board is the same for all WAX-chassis models; if you have a BE-board from a set which has a different screen size, you'll have to correct this in the service menu.
Please remember that my suggestion that the video-RAM might cause the problem is only based on experience. Because there are several possibilities for the same sympton, an accurate indication could only be given after diagnosis by an experienced technician.
For that reason I'll advise you to start with checking the standby-PSU. If you want to do that by yourself, please report it here so I can give you instructions,

Ko. I've recieved the service manual and downloaded it, many thanks for the link, much appriciated. I'll take the TV to work with me later this week as I've got all the kit I need there. I'll print out the service manual and try and familiarise myself with the TV in the mean time. Once I've worked out what's what, I'll check out the +SV standby rail and see of the voltage is there. If these tow diodes of which you speak are prone to failure, is it worth replacing them as a precaution?
I'll check stand by +5v on pin 1 of CN6203 on the G2 board.
I'm no stranger to electronics, but my background is aircraft electronics, so forgive me if I seem a little slow with TV's!

So I have a constant +4.94V on the stand by rail. I checked all the other power outputs from the G2 board, they are all with in 0.5v of their supposed values.
So where do I go from here?
Thanks for your help thus far.
Rob.

I don't think the power supply itself is the problem as the +5VSTDBY is stable.
The video-RAM is another well-known problem: it causes digital noise in the picture (digitized lines) but it is also possible that the sets switches on and off.
However, I can't say if this is the actual problem in your set. Buying a new BE-board seems a risk to me.
The WAX-chassis is used for some LCD- and plasma-sets. I'll look up which models have this chassis and report it here.
The hardware of the BE-boards of the LCD-models is the same, only the settings in the service menu is different. You can change them by yourself if needed; I can instruct you how to do that.
I'll keep you posted with the WAX model list.

So I've replaced the BE board and power supply with know good ones, alas the fault remains.
