Interesting article and comments. It's quite a dilemma. I've definitely gone the internet direct, used online, big discount house route. That's because I'm far from rich. In fact I've been doing it for awhile. The truth is all of my SS-K90EDs came either directly or indirectly from Costco and that was like 8yrs ago. I found out about the Costco sale here on Aquest BTW. I wouldn't have been able to afford 10 of them at retail back then. I probaly wouldn't pay retail price for 10 of them now despite what a great price retail was for them. My new speakers will be coming via the ID route. Money is just too tight. It'll be a shame if the M&B specialty retailers go the way of the DoDo but with the economy being what it is what are people realistically to do?

    Thanks for posting it!_mykl

Much like Mykl, my pockets are not deep enough NOT to shop on the internet and look for the most affordable price on whatever item I am considering purchasing. As sorry that it is it is a sign of the times. Here in Chicago I am watching Ma and Pa stores that have been in business for years sadly close their doors and go out of business. It's tough out there.

Joe_I agree. It's VERY tough out there. Interestingly a responder to this article said the high end specialty stores are alive and well in Chi and it's suburbs. Is that true?_mykl

    Hello Mykl,

You might be the only one on this forum who understands this.

In answer to your question, the high end audio shops that the responder mentions are in Palatine, Franklin Park, Morton Grove, Hoffman Estates, Naperville...........  You get the pattern, all of them rich North and West side suburbs. There has always been money in those towns so it doesn't surprise me that they are still doing well. As you know I'm a South Sider, one of those blue collar boys and can tell you first hand that things pretty tight right now. I will say that The Little Guys, who used to be in Homewood and are now in Mokena, seem to be doing alright.  Last time I was driving down LaGrange Avenue I saw their store front and the parking lot was full. Glad to see that.

    Joe

Joe_I understand my friend. Alot of posh tennis clubs out that way too. Or at least there were. I played at them back in the day. As you know I'm a fellow South Sider and came from the same kind of background myself. So I can imagine the average folks are having it really hard now.

It's not only hard here but starting to get very dangerous too. One of the couples that we're closest to, about a month ago the 20yr old son was shot and the husband was shot and killed in the parking lot of their job as the result of a robbery attempt. They were getting out his vehicle and were on their way into work. All for a lousy $25. That's all he had on him. Of course our marvelous police force hasn't come up with anything yet. But a few weeks ago they pumped 9 rounds into and killed an unarmed doctor as the result of a traffic stop. They thought the car was stolen. It wasn't.

    Sorry for going OT._mykl

    Mykl,

Sincerely sorry to hear about your friends and their unfortunate situation. That is the same kind of sh1t that is  happening in the inner city here. For a mere $25. Makes one sick.

One of my cousins, a retired Chi Town cop moved to LV awhile back. He told me how the LV cops are different then the Chi Town cops, in that there isn't a day that goes by that their isn't a shooting by the LV police. I fully understand a low tolerance policy but it seems that the LV cops just don't have to answer for their actions.

Joe_Thanks. I might have said this before and I apologise for going OT. Back in the early '70s they started an "independent" review board here for officer involved shootings and officer related deaths. Since it's inception only once have they ruled against the LVMPD. And that was the very FIRST case they reviewed. If you go by that, what a perfect police force we've had for the past 40yrs! The truth is far different.

IMO something similar goes on in audio. Sometimes the "stats" don't tell the whole picture. I think we need much deeper explorations of what's happening in audio to see the whole picture.  I feel there's an awful lot of what's happening in sound reproduction that we don't know and understand.I just don't think the "measurements" and our interpretations of them are telling us everything._mykl
