I just scored a heck of a thrift store buy.  A Thorens TD-280 Mk II with an Ortofon X5-MC pickup for $10.  Excellent shape.  Even the dustcover is in reasonably good condition with only minor scratches and no cracks.  It only needs new hinges.  And, thank goodness the stylus is still in good shape.

I still can't believe someone just donated it.  The pickup itself is worth many times what I paid for it.

Nice score!!!! I've heard some other stories about great finds at thrift stores, garage sales etc. Never had any luck myself with audio gear that way. But you never know.

May your new find bring you many years of happiness!_mykl

    Thanks a bunch!

I went ahead and replaced the VMS-20E in my Sony PS-X600 with the X5-MC that was on the Thorens.  The MC cartridge really works well with the Biotracer tonearm, especially when the angle was set to the protractor on the underside of the turntable mat.

Meanwhile, the VMS-20E went on the Thorens and it sounds great after the angle was set to a Baerwald protractor and the tracking and anti-skating were optimally adjusted.  On top of that, I even managed to fix the broken hinge for the dust cover lid, so now it's good.
