You got to be kidding me.  Home Theater has killed my movie experience.  Put me down for never.  Click here.

    Gentlemen,

Like yourselves short of taking my oldest granddaughter twice in the last two years to see cartoons I can not remember the last movie I went to see. My own Home Theater is more enjoyable AND a whole lot less distractions. That coupled with the price of admission and concessions makes watching the movie at home that much nicer.

My wife and I never go to the movies nor do we purchase movies on Blu-Ray.  We simply wait until the movie is available on Comcast On Demand and then pay to watch it.

I haven't watched BluRay yet as I don't own a BluRay player. I do plan on getting one though and I do own one BluRay: The Day The Earth Stood Still. That's the original with Michael Rennie BTW not the remake. I've owned that disc since it came out but I've never watched it as I don't have a BDP. I'm dying to see Gort on BR. Yet I'm afraid that the BR capability of the BDP might not get much use unless Cox cable or Redbox starts having BluRay. Like John, our "new" movie viewing is either from On Demand or a Redbox rental. Most of our movie watching is from the premium channels such as HBO etc. Personally the channel I probably watch the most on my own is TCM. The really sad thing is I have a collection of over 200 DVDs and very, very rarely pull one out to watch. Don't ask me why as I don't have an answer. I just watch the movie channels on cable. Ironically there are times those same movies that I watch I actually have on DVD. Go figure. For example I made a point of being in front of the TV to catch The Adventures Of Robin Hood on TCM today yet I have it on DVD. I think it comes from my childhood conditioning of making sure you were at the TV to catch a certain movie or program. Just haven't trained myself to pull out a DVD when I want to watch something. Also it seems when I make the decision to grab a disc instead of pulling out a DVD to watch I grab some CDs to listen to._mykl

    NITEHAWK:

The last time I paid to see a movie in a theater was 1977 or 1978 to see CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND.
I now depend on Blu-ray and dvd to watch movies.

The last movie to see my presents in a theater was "Deep Impact" (199.  HBO, Showtime and Cinemax slowed down my movie theater experience in the 80's, but it took so long for a feature film to come to cable back then.  But when it did, my trusty betamax was at hand for repeated viewing at 350 lines of resolution on my first 21" Sony.  For the price of cable, I was able to start my first movie collection.

The real cost of ownership took it's toll when I got into Laser Disc.  Average price was about $40 a movie back in the late 80's and the resolution increased to 400 lines displayed on a 25" XBR.  The movie theater would never see me again, so I thought.

When DVD's came out, I was crushed because I had over 200 laser disc that I couldn't even give away.  Started my movie collection again on DVD, joined some club that brought the price down to about $20 a movie and paired it with a 36" XBR.  After my first progressive experience (480p) at home w/6.1 sound, my movie theater experience was over and out.

I've come full circle no with Bluray.  Back to recording again in 1080i via the built-in DVR on my cable box dispalyed on a 50" PDP.  No more hard media for me as I already have boxes full of beta videotape, laser disc's and DVD's.  As soon as I can find relialbe software for hi-def recording via pc, I've going to kick this DVR to the curb.

My feelings are exactly the same. My HD Cox cable DVR outputs in either in 780p or 1080i but my 73" DLP, and now my new Marantz receiver, upscale all signals to 1080p. If I can get quality HD video playback and recording from a PC I'm going to break free from hard media as well. Hard media is just so impractical for me._mykl

Given the feelings expressed here what amazes me is the astronomical box office receipts for some movies. I just wonder who is going?_mykl
