Typically, they will not add new features not advertised as being there originally. At best, if it has Internet access, they may update available services, but even then, not all. My TV (EX700) and older BD player (S370) do not have Vudu, but the newer BD (S380) does.

Join the crowd! I purchased my KDL55XBR8 just under two years ago for a discounted price of $5755! It features tri-luminous LED backlighting, which at the time was the best and still may be. However, all that I can do the hard wired internet connection is view photos! I can no longer receive software updates, probably because software updates have been terminated for this model. Last year I purchased an iPad 2. When Apple comes out with an equivalent sized TV you know that you will be able to control it with an iPad or iPhone and blow your mind with what you can do on the internet. Of course, it probably will require an iPad 3. And so it goes! Obviously, after paying what I did for KDL55XBR8, I won't be purchasing a new TV anytime soon.
Your best bet to add the features that you mentioned is network media player that fits the bill. The Sony SMP-N200 would be nice, but it presently doesn't include Skype. It's on sale now for only $79.99. Also, the literature states that:
"Plus, new apps are automatically delivered so your selection is never outdated and you are always connected to the best entertainment. Control it all with a simple smartphone app for iPhone® and Android™"
