My TV sounds like it is powering up and makes a low whirring sound but the screen never turns on. First, I get a flashing green "power/standby" light with a constant red "standby" light, then the green "power/standby" light turns off and I get a constant flashing red "lamp" light (I counted 11 until the TV powers down. I have replaced the lamp numerous times in the past. When I look at the lamp, it does not look burned out. I have read that the problems sometimes is a "spark gap" related to the use of a non-Sony lamp. Is it worth trying a lamp exchange? Or is the problem larger, such as a broken driver ?? Someone please help!

If a lamp is defective, and thus not ignites, the output voltage of the ballast (or "lamp driver") raises too high.
On the ballast a spark gap is mounted in parallel with the lamp connections. If the output voltage raises too high, the spark gap ignites and drains the excessive voltage.

You might need to replace the lamp driver. How many hours do you have on that lamp?
