    Hi,

Yes unfortunately the unit for your model is and you have to check for a donor machine for the day when your unit needs a newer laser.

Thanks TMC....thats what i thought. Luckily, i was out around this weekend & found an authorized Sony repair shop way off the beaten path & snagged a brand new optical laser unit for the early 90's CDP-ES models, the last one they had in stock. ITs compatible with C77ES, C89ES,C75ES, C85ES & others. The tech said that it had been in stock for awhile & gave me a smokin deal on it. I didn't tell him that they were discontinued, but to my surprise when i arrived home & opened the box....there was 2 optical laser units inside instead of one!!!
