    Hi,

in 4:3 Mode the bars at the side of the picture are only black when I decrease brightness considerably. So I have two options (in 4:3 mode): a dark picture and black bars or a bright picture and black bars (stretching or zooming the picture is not an option for me).

I really think that grey bars are very distracting and I'd like to have them black (since it is a CRT TV there shouldn't be a big burn in problem). Is there ANY way to turn the bars in 4:3 mode black? Maybe there is a possibility in the service menu (which I have access to but doesn't tell me much). Please help me - I cannot really enjoy 4:3 program this way.

    Thank you very much

    Marko

When you look in page 30 of the KV-28FX60x manual (9-974-974-01), you see a table of items which can be set for the category "Feature Low-End".

Two of these items are "Sidepa sta" and "Sidepa sto". Note that the number before these items is 97 and 98 in this table, but they may be different in your set due to another version of the system software, and also the names could be different.

The value at the right hand side of these settings instruct the scaler-IC (in this set called PANORAM-IC) where the sidepanels in 4:3 mode have to start and stop. In other words: the (horizontal) position of the sidepanels is changed.

Just above these settings there are settings for "Overlay V", "Overlay U" and "Overlay Y".  I think (!) that these items could (!) set the color and level of the sidepanels.

You could try to note down the value of item "Overlay Y", change it to a lower value, eg. 7, press "MENU" to get the TT-- indication on the screen and then press 00 to exit service mode. Then look if it has the desired result. If not, return the value to the initial, former noted, value.

If this worked, the combination of values for "Overlay U" and "Overlay V" would determine the color of the sidepanels.

You wrote that burn-in would not be a big problem for CRT TV's, but when 4:3 pictures are displayed for a long time on a 16:9 CRT, you could notice a significant difference in brightness when displaying a full-screen picture.

Please note that changing of some items in the service menu could result to a situation that you cannot return from by yourself. In the workshop an image of the dataset is saved onto a PC, so if something went wrong there is a possibility to upload this dataset to the TV again. For this operation you need the TRACE interface and software.

@mbt_junkyard. At first thank you very much for your quick reply. The "burn in problem" is not a real problem for me because i watch many 16:9 DVDs so the screen is used everywhere. Unfortunately even though the "Low Feature End" menu is mentioned in the service manual it does not appear on my screen (in main menu I only have to chose between "Initializing", "Reset Devices", "Monitoring", "Device Register Setting" and "Special Adjustments").

Haven't seen any other settings which could correspond to "Sidepa sta / sidepa sto" or "Overlay V / U".

But again thank you for your thoughts.

The information in the service manual is based on a very early version of the system software. As the software is updated, the manual is not updated accordingly.

Can you give the items which are showed after selecting "Device register settings" and "Special adjustments" ?

"Device Register Settings" leads to the menues
Backend, Deflection, Ext. Deflection, Dynamic Convergence, Colour Decoder 1, D/A Converter, Feature High-End, Audio/Video Switch, Autowide and Sound.

"Special Adjustments" has no sub menues and contains
RGB Level, RGB Gain, RGB PAT Level, RGB PAT Gain, RGB H. Position
Extra FW, EPG ChkS Check, Slicer High, FCW Wide, High Pll
Panic Offset, Wide Mute, NTSC Auto YC AV2, NTSC Auto YC AV3
AV Shp reduct, RGB Disable, Cb Offset 2 Main, Cr Offset 2 Main, Cb Offset 1 sub, Cr Offset 1 sub, Intern GD, AV2 YC mix Output

I also noticed there is an Option "Black" in the D/A Converter Menu (when using production mode) which seems to adjust the overall black level but changing the value only seems to work on the Black level while in the menu. After exiting Service Menu nothing has changed. Same thing applies for the option "Gamma" in Backend Menu (normal service mode)

I think that you may find someting in the "Feature High-end" section of the service menu.

It's quite a long time ago I repaired my last AE5 chassis based TV so I can't remember everything of it, but I doubt if there have existed a LOW-end featurebox. (My first thinking was that they meant an ECO-version with less memory which were 100 Hz sets but did not have line flicker reduction, but now I start to think that they have initially misnamed it and they meant the high-end feature box. This is a common name in 100 Hz televisions.)

As it is much work to write down all items of the "High end feature" settings, maybe you can take photographs of it and post them here or send them to tv(at)techie(dot)com . I'll see if I can find items which may be of use for you.

Maybe there ist a way to reduce the black level and raise the overall brightness. This way I could turn down the normal brightness which would lead to (more or less) black bars. I may have found some of the settings to do so. The only problem is that they are only accessible in production mode (TT62) in D/A Converter and after exiting the menu the picture goes back to normal. Is there maybe a trick how to prevent this? The same happens when changing the gamma value in Backend menu.

Sorry for the delay, but I can't find anything which gives a clue in the pictures you took.

Maybe you can  slightly lower the G2-voltage (Schirmgitterspannung) to darken the overall picture and then raise the sub-brightness adjustment in the service menu.
