    Hi all you good people!

My DVP-NS9100ES displays CANNOT PLAY, no matter what type of disc I feed it with. It happened quite suddenly, as I had just played the 5.1 version of "The Incident" by Porcupine Tree with no errors. For a couple of times I succeeded to make it play by just turning off the player, turn it on again and it started. But very soon it only played some 2-3 minutes of any disc, if it would ever start at all - now nothing happens except there is a sound from the drive that tells me it is trying to make it spin.

Looking inside, there is no physical evidence of damages and the naive reaction was just to clean the glass for the laser ... still it will not play.

Does any of you have experience in the cause to this? A friend told me, that you - when the lid is off - can push to the disc, and it will begin to play. This should be a sign, that the "transport system" (whatever that is ...) need to be fastened. Is that a clou?

Try a complete system reset. For instructions, see page 76 in the player's operating guide. If you don't have the guide, download it from here:

    http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=DVPNS9100ES

If the reset fails to resolve the problem, time to send it to Sony for repairs.

Thanks argouser - that is what I wanted to try, but connected to the tv-screen, it will not display the menu. I have tried this both with and without a disc in the tray. I will give it another try, before I let Sony solve it ...

Suceeded last night in getting the menu on display. The reset option did not change anything, except the player now sometimes tells me "NO DISC" even with a cd in the tray. But with the lid open, I saw the disc actually spin and stops 3-4 times before it displays the error.

I am contemplating purchasing this exact player and have read some reviews of issues like this.

What would be a good price for a fully functional mint condition DVP-NS9100ES?

After having a good friend and technician to look for cause of the error - just in case it could be fixed "simple" - it had to go to the repair-shop. They have now informed me, that the OPTICAL TRAVERSE UNIT  needs to be shifted. I guess it will solve the problem, but their service does not include telling me about the reason why it broke.

Does any of you know something about this?

The player is back! The unit shifted and everything is ok. I think the player had an error before it broke down. On some sacd´s (i.e. Deep Purple) it was not able to get hold of the sacd-layer - it is now!

    The bill was DKR 2345!

    Thanks for the update Mrman.

Ouch! That was a costly repair.
Am I understanding correctly that the Optical Traverse assembly needed shifting or adjusting? Seems like  lot of money for realigning the lens.
Happy to hear that is working again.

    Joe

It needed shifting. Costly yes, but I decided to take the cost, as I bought the player used for less than 1/5 of the price from new and it is still an excellent player.

I fully agree that your DVP-NS9100ES was well worth the repair. It just seems like a lot of money for an adjustment. It must be very labor intesive.

Joe - not just adjustment (if any). The whole unit, named Optical Transfer Unit was shifted - as written

Thank you for the explanation Mrman.

Now the cost makes more sense. It was just a difference in the translation. Your term is: "the Optical Transfer Unit was shifted".  My term would be: the Optical Transfer Unit was replaced. Same meaning just a different way of saying it.

Bottom line is that I am happy to hear that your wonderful DVP-NS9100ES is working properly again.

    Regards,
    Joe

LOL - I tried to figure, what was wrong with my reply, but yes: Replaced is the right word ...

Good news ... I sent the invoice to my insurance company, to try and let them cover the repair. And they did! Both the amp and the player was paid for. Very happy - unexpected money made our holiday a bit more fun than planned.

    Hello Mrman,

Happy to hear that your insurance company covered the repairs and made your Holiday that much more fun. I need your insurance coverage!
