I been thinking about a new Blu Ray DVD player when the income tax check comes. This Oppo plays all kinds of formats including SACD and DVD-Audio. I never paid much attention to those formats, but after connecting my Sony Blu-Ray to the analog in's on my DA4-ES, the sound just blew me away. It freaks out the wife. I am now interested in these audio formats. It has BD Live, but so far no direct links to the movie servers. I can live without that. I download movies from my Direct TV Broadband connection. The reason I am writing this, is I want to know what you guys think of this player. I hate to be a traitor to Sony, but this player seems to have a lot going for it.

I'm not sure I follow you. Sounds like your Sony BR player is capable of SACD and DVD-A. Is this correct? If so, you should be covered for all formats. Why do you want an Oppo?
I have the BDP-83 for my HT blu-ray player. Fast loading times, and has played everything I've loaded into it.

My BDP-S300 does not support those audio formats. I was talking about Dolby True HD & DTS-HD. It also only has 5.1 analog outs. I know there is not a lot of 7.1 recordings, but I think there will be in the future. Why the heck are they selling all that 7.1 audio equipment? I am also impressed with Oppo's excellent DVD upconversion.

I strictly use my Oppo for blu-ray. I have another Universal player to handle dvd upconversion, so I cannot comment from personal experience. With that said, every review from professionals and users have all been positive regarding dvd upconversion.
Does your receiver have hdmi? If so, another unit to consider would be a PS3. It seems to be future proof. Well, at least for the next few years anyways.

My receiver does not have HDMI inputs. The DA4-ES is one of the best Sony Receivers ever built and I don't plan on buying a new one for a long time. I prefer a standalone unit over a PS-3.

I'd like to know a little about it's audio setup menu, especially audio levels.

I have a BDP-83 connected to my DA4ES and like it a lot. Like most blu-ray players it does a great job on Blu-rays, but it also does a great job on DVDs. I have only used it a little for CD/SACD but so far I am not disapointed.
Its setup menu is pretty easy to understand and it lets you change speaker levels. What specific questions do you have?

----------------- There are no wrong choices in life just easy and hard paths to be taken. We live by these decisions and they make us who we are today. G'day skytrooper, I understand your line of thinking I've been following the Oppo BDP players since they hit the market. Also I to have an older ES amp/Reciever(STRVA333ES) that i wouldn't swap the world for ,which I have my Sony BDPS550 playing analog connected via the 7.1 multichannel RCA's. I don't know if your aware there is a brand new Oppo BDP83 SE (special ediiton) selling for about $1,000 in the states and $1,600 here in Australia ,which is using 4 DACs instead of 1 and a new and improved power supply. It is suppose to sound and look a lot better than the BDP83 standard player(but double the cost). I've personally always love listening to SACD's and DVD-A's so i have a Denon 3910 that also is connected via analog 5.1 to my STR-VA333ES to play my library of Hi Def music .So personally i don't need the added advantage that the Oppo universal player has over my Sony BDPS550,I already have it with both players. I can personally recommend the advantage it would have in playback ,if your interested in SACD's and DVD-a's,they sound fantastic . There is only one other line of thought that keeps me personally from swaying towards one player(like the Oppo BDP83 ES) for all my music and movies at present...That is 3D is around the corner and Sony and all the other manufacturers will start adding these decoding functions to all new players in the near future. So personally I'd hold off. Mav,

Hi, Mav. We talked about analog inputs a while back. When I purchased my Sony Blu-Ray, I didn't even know about them til I read the manual and hooked them up. I bought it because it was on sale and got 10 free Blu-Ray movies. But that sound, fantastic! The 1000 $ model Oppo is a bit much for me, I am looking at the 500 $ model. I would like to know if the Oppo has individual output adjusts for the analog outs.

Skytrooper,
As mhedges mentioned above, the individual line level outputs from the analog jacks can be adjusted. Good luck with your decision.

Also, the SE version only upgrades the analog audio output. It does nothing for video or digital audio out.

Great to hear your enjoying Uncompresssed audio .The Oppo Bluray player will open up fantastic choice of music in the other formates. DVD-A'a and SACD's are fantastic to listen to but sadly there not obtainable off line anymore(not in Australia). It seems that Bluray music might take off with the general public where SACD's and DVD-a's never did. Its addictive once you get hooked on Hi Def audio isn't it? Mav'

Mark For us old guys with old school analog amps its perfect "LOL". Interesting that the Oppo BDP83SE is universal and plays in any region 110volts or 240volts and code region free.. Mav.
