I've got an almost-2 year old kdf46e2000 rear-projection set.  A few months ago the TV start doing the following: the picture & sound went out while the power light blinked green many times.  Sometimes it would come back on (both audio & video) but it would shut off quickly again and repeat the blinking process.  It's not blinking out codes, as I've researched the manual.

The Sony help center didn't help me at all over the phone, the best they could do was provide the numbers to 2 'certified' repair centers which got terrible reviews and were deemed not trustworthy.  I thought that the problem was with cooling (it's similar to what PCs do when they overheat), so I changed the cooling setting from normal to high.  It worked immediately, and I was happy.

Unfortunately the problem has resurfaced out of nowhere now.  After doing some more research I've found that this is likely not an issue with the lamp (it's definitely not blinking out any code to suggest the lamp needs replacement) but instead the ballast could be damaged from dust attracting moisture?  Before going out and purchasing expensive parts, I would appreciate any help passed on my way to either support or disprove this faulty ballast theory, thank you.

    Hi,

If it's power cycling where it's turning off and on it could be the ballast/lamp driver. I would clean out the back since it could be due to overheating. Continuously blinking is usually a lamp replacement. You could run the self diagnostic test that is in the Frequently Asked questions thread.

I just saw another thread that I just responded to with the same model KDF46E2000 that had optical block issues.Sony will repair it for free until June 2010.

Not entirely sure that this is the problem. However, you could call them and they will send a repair person to see if it is the issue which will save you time and money

I would replace the lamp, especially if you are still using the original lamp.
