i have the infinity kappa 8s circa 1979-2-4 ohms-the only receiver that will drive them in my small 12x14 room is an onkyo--all the others shut down--the specs dont count---the QUALITY of the parts does!

studranger- Please post some pictures of the build quality of your onkyo receiver so we can see what you consider passes for quality parts. A friend of mine who is an Audio Electronics Technician has had several onkyo receivers come across his bench and I have had the chance to check out the build quality on several of them and they were filled with embarrassingly cheap generic parts that had values that were a fraction of the size of my Sony Receiver which is laden with well known name brand high quality parts including a pair of Nichicon Muse Gold Tune power supply caps and a full complement of Nichicon Muse Fine Gold caps throughout both the Analog and Digital circuitry and as every Audiophile knows it is high quality parts that produce impressive specs...
Not to mention the high quality Alps Volume Attenuator with its own array of Nichicon Muse Fine Gold caps...

Maxx, what was the source of the power ratings that you listed? I just compared the power ratings in the US, CAN, AEP, UK service manuals for the STRDA5500ES and the STRDA5400ES and they are identical and the same as what you listed, except that upper frequency value listed is 20 kHz, not 24 kHz and no THD 10% ratings are listed.

Sorry, I didn't check out your link before. I find it interesting that those specs were available at Sony United Kingdom and that the service manual that I downloaded applies to the UK version. I'd go with what I found.

John- I agree in that measurements at 10% THD do nothing but inflate the power rating anyway.

I downloaded the STR-DA5500ES manual from Abt Electronics in Chicago. On the basis of what I found, I pre-ordered the unit for $1,999. While I've been happy with my STR-DA7100, it's time to upgrade.

I noticed no H.A.T.S ?? At this price, I would have expected it. Is there going to be a 5600ES (with H.A.T.S)?
The H.A.T.S. is well worth the extra cost, as it makes a significant difference in sound quality.
