I 'm hoping someone may have come across and or solved my issue. My 400 Disc DVD no longer can read any of the discs. It will read... attempt to play... and then give a "cannot play" error message before it moves on to the next disc repeating the same process over and over again. The unit is about 18 months old but definitely out of warranty at this point.

You're the second post that listed a megachanger laser problem. This might be a Sony defect for sure. My previous advice was to pop the top off, and manually clean the laser lens.

Confirmed .. My spindle motor was bad read post from 9-12-09 first. Simply put if you take the cover off of your unit and you us the load function and see that you motor can not perform its task try turning it by hand it should be extremy easy to turn with no noise. mine wasn't. Although you have to buy the whole spindle motor/laser assy I chose to disassemble my unit and keep the old laser module in the player and save the new one in reserve. While i write the player is reloading it movie memory with no calibration or diagnostics being perform after replacement. Any questions feel free to ask.

Hi... Sunlitcomet: Can you tell me where you got your laser assembly? I've got the same problem... I think they have the motor at electronix.com, but I'd rather replace the whole thing. It's a great machine, and I'd like to keep it going for a couple of more years until I build a video server
Thanks, Murph

A simple way to narrow it down it is to remove the transport mechanism cover off the back. You will be able to see the spindle/laser transport. Start the load function from the front panel. While attempting this function, watch to see if your disc will actually spin up to a few hundred rpm. If it does not and perhaps is barely moveing and/or perhaps squeling alot the your motor is gone. For the laser if you look at the play side of the disc and not see a red dot focusing (look from different angles)on the disc when attempting to read discs then your laser is most likely burnt out. If disc spins, does not read dvd/sacd but reads your cds part of your laser block is bad. If it spins but does not read either type of disk check for loose connectors or run self diagnostics before codemning the laser block.
At any rate the laser block and motor set are sold as one unit for about $105. You will need soldering iron and desoldeing braid or tool to remove disable the anti-static protection after unpacking and before installing it. Intructions on this are included as well as in the service manual.
For me it took less then 35 minutes from cover off to cover on including test verification.
Obtain your part from:
http://www.partstore.com/GetModel.aspx?MfgName=Sony&BrandName=Sony&ModelNumber=DVPCX995V&Page=1&SortBy=price&SortDirection=desc#PartsearchSKUList
Part is :
Sony A-1109-165-A Service Assy, Dbu-3
Do you require a service manual?

Sunlitcomet- I am having the same problem with my unit, cannot play discs. I have taken the top off of it and watched as each disc is inserted into the player from the carousel. It locks the disc in, spins it up for about 2 seconds, spins the disc down to a stop and displays the message "Cannot play". Does that sound like my motor is working properly and the problem is the laser assembly? I did find just the laser assembly at partstore.com for $105.95 but they said it was just the laser unit and not the motor and all of that. I was also told on another forum that Sony has an exchange program for this model unit. They would fix the unit for a flat fee of $130.00 or you can send your broken unit in with $265.00 and they will send you a refurb unit. Do you know anything about this? Can I also get the info on the service manual too? Thanks.

I tried to play an audio cd and a cd that I burned a bunch of JPEG pics onto and both played just fine. It just won't play any dvd's. Could that part of the laser unit for the dvd's just be burned out?

The dvd/SACD components in your optical block have failed. The other internal components are fine. That $106 dollar part is actually a assembly. it will have a laser block, servo motor and spindle/motor assy. mounted on a frame. When you get the unit it is important to follow the instructions to desolder the static protection joint on the block before putting power on the unit or you might fry it. Otherwise everything should be fine right after your done.
The unit exchange deal i have heard of but not the flat rate fee. I just fixed it my self as it is not that diificult. In fact my spindle motor was at fualt on my second changer so when I got a new assy. I actually took it apart and swapping the laser blocks reusing the old one that was just fine therfore saveing the new block for a third changer wth a busted laser i will probably buy broken off ebay at a later time.
