I now have 2 DCR-TRV120's with the same problem. I believe the issue to be dirty heads and perhaps tape path (and even a sensor for tape type). Does someone know how I can get the heads cleaned. I sent one unit in to a reputable company for repair and they could not get parts for the machine and so did not attempt repair.
The issue is merely playback only. Everything else seems to be fine. Itrecords, it occasionally will play intermittently. I have used a headcleaning tape and if used several times in a row, I can get some briefplayback. However I know that's not good for the heads to overuse thehead cleaning tape.
In my case I have noticed that the camcorder will show that it isreading an analog (8mm/Hi8 ) tape and not the proper Digital 8indicator showing. It could be that my tape type sensor is out of whackor dirty.
I have no access to a service manual to help determine theprocedure for fixing these symptoms or looking further into the tapetype sensor.
Any input would be appreciated and may help 2 people with this issue. Thanks.

If in fact it is a dirty head and/or tape path, try a tape cleaner that uses a wet solution. If that does not work, you might have to get inside with a cleaning swab and solution and clean the heads and path manually.

I'll see if I can locate the wet type cleaner that I tucked away years ago. If that doesn't work I'll need to know just where the tape path is. Any instructions or service manual to assure I don't get into trouble or do the wrong thing.
I'll let you know how plan A goes.

I tried using the wet type cleaner on the camcorder. It worked for 2 tapes then back to the old routine of no clean video. It would stutter the images and sound. It turns out that I actually used the wet type cassette cleaner incorrectly. I inserted the tape and put the camcorder on camera mode rather than VTR mode. I then tried to play back the tape while mistakenly having it in camera mode so I tried using the dry tape cleaner again.
When the playback image began to falter again, I did it the right way to no effect. I did it the wrong way again, with little improvement. I tried to use the dry cleaner again and now I get no picture at all. I'm ready to give it up... for now.
