Brilliant idea if it works.  I'll have a look at my DA9000 schematics for some clues.  Based on my experience with the 7100 & 9000 I think Sony have missed a trick by not doing this for us.

Thinking about it overnight, I had a couple of ideas.  This forum has a few threads on the STR- or TA-DA91000 amplifier which does have HDMI inputs.  There are probably some pictures of the rear panel, and it may be possible to se whether the 9100 uses the same P/N module as the 7100.   From memory, they did look the same.

There was  also an upgrade programme for the 9000 to make it a 9050 IIRC.  This was covered around here a couple of years ago.  There may be some information about what changes are necessary.  The 9100 has room correction like most new receivers, and I guess that might be out of the question for the 9000.  The important bit wil be whether the 9000 needs a different mother board or software to run an HDMI interface.

I don't know if this helps or not, but back in 2005 the modifications for the 9000ES up to the 9005ES were as follows-

    - Upgrade of S-Master Pro from 24 bit to 32 bit precision
    - two i.link inputs
    - HDMI inputs (2 inputs, 1 output)
    - Dolby Pro Logic IIx
    - Multiple Zone
    - New Remote

It looks like the HDMI inputs (2 inputs, 1 output) STR-DA9000ES mod replaced the existing DVI-D connectors with HDMI connectors and replaced the DVI board with an HDMI board.  The TA-DA9000ES doesn't include DVI-D I/O, so I doubt that it could be modified to include HDMI I/O.

Looking at the rear panels of the TA-DA9000 and TA-DA9100, it looks like it was the i-link board that was replaced by the HDMI board.  That stands to reason, as the DVI board wouldn't have had a digital audio connection into the mother board.

I doubt any MOD like this would work without modifications to the units firmware. Although in principle it sounds good, i would guess that not a single memebr here would have the tolls necessary to takle re writing the firmware

SonyCIS- Here are Member bizzibee's thoughts on the DA9000ES to DA 9005ES upgrade that Sony was doing in its Malasian facilities in 2006. The links are no longer functional, but the post remains a record of the existence and viability of the 9000ES Mod-

Here are my thoughts on the upgrade Sony Japan are offering it's TA-DA9000ES customers. I would love to upgrade my TA-DA9000ES to get DVD-Audio via iLink. Yes the other improvements would be good as well I guess. However I'm not sure the upgrade is value for money. However I'm sure there would beothers who think it is.

I'm not really that interested in the Digital Cinema Auto Calibration feature. However if it did do a really good job, then it would be worth having. It's a pity it isn't offered in this upgrade considering the cost of the upgrade.

The cost of the upgrade is 294,000 Yen. As noted by some of the Japanese on-line AV Mags, that is almost half the cost of a new TA-DA9100ES. 294,000Yen, is approx. 3,398.37 AUD, 2,491.90 USD or 1,448.40 GBP. It is almost half the cost I would expect the TA-DA9100ES to sell for here inAustralia, if it ever was released here.

Customers have from 16th December 2005 to 15th February 2006 to 'order' the upgrade. However the actual upgrade won't take place until May 2006. Seems like a long time to wait.

It looks like you loose the Direct Mode after the upgrade. Not that I use that feature anyway.

It will be interesting to see if the 'TA-DA9005ES Upgrade' (less the D5 toD4 upgrade), is offered outside Japan. Perhaps Sony Japan is testing the 'Upgrade waters' so to speak in Japan.

Apart from all the Japanese on-line Mag/Sites reporting the TA-DA9005ES upgrade. A French on-line AV Mag has also reported the TA-DA9005ES upgrade on it's site.See:

I would like DVD-Audio via iLink but not for $3,398.37 AUD. I'm not sure how much the other new features of the TA-DA9100ES (less Digital Cinema Auto Calibration) are worth to a current TA-DA9000ES owner.

TA-DA9000ES owner outside Japan might get the following if the upgrade was offered:

Upgrade of S-Master Pro from 24 bit to 32 bit precision
    Two i.link inputs
HDMI inputs (2 inputs, 1 output)
    Dolby Pro Logic IIx
    Multiple Zone
    New Remote

STR-DA9000ES owner might get the following if the upgrade was offered:

Upgrade of S-Master Pro from 24 bit to 32 bit precision
    two i.link inputs
DVI to HDMI modification ⇒ HDMI inputs (2 inputs, 1 output)
    Dolby Pro Logic IIx
    New Remote

I don't know whether SonyCIS has been able to make any progress with upgrading his DA9000ES, but thinking about it recently, I doubt there is much hope.  I've been fortunate to get hold of the schematics for both the DA9000ES and DA7100ES, and there are some significant differences. Al inputs on the DA9000ES are buffered, switched, then converted to DSD for processing.  Its then converted to PCM for lipsync (IIRC) then fed to the output stage.  The DA7100ES is quite different, and uses entirely PCM for processing.  I don't know whether the architecture of the DA9100ES follows that of the 9000 or the 7100, and I've no idea whether that means the sound quality of the 9100 will be like that of the 9000 or the 7100.

I am hoping to find out though.  I've been trying to find a way to get hold of a DA9100ES for years, my 9000 having fought off every processor and power amp that I could throw in its way.  I believe I have just secured a used DA9100 from a dealer in Japan, that I am hoping to import.  I'm trying not to get too excited, but the thought of DA9k SQ with a 24-bit digital audio chain like the 7100 is literally making my mouth water.

I'll be holding onto my DA9000 until the 9100 arrives, so I can make some comparisons with different sources.  So fingers crossed in eager anticipation.  I've got my local repair shop revved up to get 240V transformers instead of the 100V units, and I can't wait.

There must be a good reason why this has been Sony's flagship AV amplifier for five years.

    Nick

    Nick,

Please let us know how the 9100ES goes.  I would be very much interested in doing the same thing, but for Australia.

I can only hope that at some stage in the near future Sony will release a TA-DA9x00ES with multiple HDMI 1.3a inputs and 2 HDMI outputs.  There should not be much to do on their end.  They only really need to develope a board to replace the i-link interface board from a DA9000ES (as has been seen on the DA9100ES)

    Anthony
