    Hello.

I purchased a sony KLV-32U100M as soon as it hit the shelves.  Unlike others who had their unit go out in days or weeks, it wasn't until about 10 months into ownership that I started experiencing problems with the unit switching off and on for no apparent reason.  Sometimes it would switch off and stay off for secs to mins.

I of course called Sony and they said I would need to arrange for the local Sony service rep to come out and look at the unit.  The service rep stated that it was $100 for them to come out, and this would be refunded if a problem was found.  At the time I didn't have the $100 to waste on a service rep barely more knowledgable about electronics than I am in the hope he would actually find something covered by Sony and all my problems would disappear.

The problem basically disappear for a while, popping up every once in a while for a couple days.  For the last several months, however, the problem has steadily gotten worse.  Now my unit is off permanently.  I've tried a reset on the unit (unplugging for 60 secs) but still no luck.  I can hear the unit try to turn itself on after I press the power button.   Sometimes the green power light comes on and the unit will act like it is coming back to life.  But you can hear it shut right back off.  This can go on forever.

From my EXTENSIVE research this seems to be VERY common problem with this unit.  Apparently it is a problem with the A-board.  I got my hands on the service manual and even found where I could buy a new A-board.  In my research, I discovered that apparently Sony has issued a service bulletin on this model regarding this problem.  However, in all my conversations with Sony customer service they refuse to admit that there is any known problem with the model.  They also refuse to help me in any way.  Has anyone seen the service bulletin I'm referring to or has any advice to offer?  I really don't want to purchase a new A-board only to have it go bad as well.

    Thank you in advance.

Update...  also got my hands on Sony's Diagnostic Manual for this unit.  I disassembled the unit and tested pin 8 on PN19 on the A-Board.  The voltmeter registered 5 volts on that pin.  And of course I tested all the wires to make sure there was a proper loop.  So it looks like a new A-board for me.  If anyone has shared my experience, please let me know.  I'm really dreading putting in a new A-board for it to go bad as well. Everything I've read however, suggested it was the A-board before I  took it apart and tested it.  Also, nothing I've read suggested that after a new A-board is put in there were further problems.

Correction: Don't buy from nexttronics.com, their customer service is terrible.  Look up your part here: https://servicesplus.us.sony.biz/default.aspx, then call 800.488.7669 to order directly from Sony.  The Part number for the A-board 1-789-465-12 (1-789-465-11 was been replaced with 12).

I must say... I will never buy another Sony product in my life.  For the internet to be littered with nothing but complaints about this product and its sister the 40u100m and Sony not admit they shipped defective product and refuse to stand behind their product is a sign of their lack of commitment to quality and customer service.  I will also never make the mistake of essentially beta testing a product again.  My only hope is that others stumble on this post and benefit from the information I've provide that took days to compile.  If anyone needs the Service or Diagnostic manuals for this model or its sister, I would be happy to provide them.

I too was reluctant to purchase the new A board (it is revised as it doesn't have one wire on the board).  It has been performing well for the past 6 months.

Did u get your hands on the service bulletin?  Also, I think that the A board can be fixed as the parts store was giving a $150 refund upon the return of the old core part.  Could be burnt out voltage regulator.  Yes I am electronically inclined!

In looking at the SonyESI (US/CAN) service information for the KLV32u100m, I see a service bulletin advising not to replace the metal bracket when replacing the A board and the following tip:

    SYMPTOMS

Dead, no power, or intermittent shutdown symptoms and solutions as reported by service field

    RESOLUTION

    1. STBY good, has Power Supply voltages on the G 1 Board.
PS voltages on the A Board missing.
    Replaced the A Board.

    2. Dead
    SOLUTION: Found A Board defective.
Note: Please note that the inital data for this problem has shown that the  problem is usually
on the A Board, not the G Board.

    Notes:
Break/Fix information may be based on a single instance of this problem.
It in no way indicates a serious problem and is only provided as an aid, in the case that
you are repairing  this model for a similar symptom.

I just acquired a defective KLV-32u100m. Have the two of you--Slistineand Docsalr--had any problems with new board you put in the unit?Apparently, there are others who have had problems with replacements,so I'm interested to hear what happened.

Also, Docsalr, what parts store gave you the $150 rebate on the new board?

The cheapest I can find it is Nextronics at $220.

    Any advice is appreciated.

    Hi,

I have the same (I think) issue with my Sony KLV-40U100M model.  Went to power it on one day and NOTHING!  No led lights, no sound, no video...no nothing!  I followed Slistines troubleshooting advice but when I check PIN 8 on CN19, I get 4 VDC.  I expected 5 vdc or nothing at all.  I tested with a voltmeter by contacting the red positive on PIN 8 and the black negative on PIN 1 and get 4 VDC.  When I test PIN 8 with the blck negative on the metal chasis, I get just under 6 VDC.

I would be grateful for answers to 2 questions:
    1. Am I doing the test correctly?  If I get 4 VDC on PIN 8 on CN19 is it my Power Supply G2 board that's bad because it's not putting out 5 VDC?

    2. Can someone give me a link to the service manual (prefer to get it free of course) or email it to me please?

    Much appreciation for your help.

Do you think I need to replace the "A" board or the "G2"?  Since my last post here, I looked a little closer at the board and discovered that there seems to be a burned/melted away item on the "A" board specifically at C352.  I jumped across the two pints of solder and powered the unit on but still nothing at all.  Is there anyone out there on theis site who knows what Sony is doing to rebuild these boards when they are sent in for a refund when buying a replacement restored board?

    Hello everyone,

I just joined this forum, as I see this is a common problem with this model. I was a Sony Factory Service Center technician for 17 years and have a lot of experience with Sony products, although I am familiar with pre-2000 products only. My experience is mostly with audio products, as I was a lead tech for most of my tenure on audio only. I was cross-trained on camcorders and some other products, but it was not my major area of expertise.

Anyway, I just recieved one of these monitors from someone who didn't want to pay to have it repaired. I downloaded the service manual from another website (not here - google it if you need one). Spent a couple of hours troubleshooting yesterday. In spite of common belief, there are still some of us who can troubleshoot SMD circuit boards to component level! :-)

I started with the obvious, checking the +5v line on pin 8 of CN19 (it was present). Checked the power switch input and all the other obvious things. Since everything seems to be in order, I started looking for processor contingencies (xtal ref, Vcc, Reset, etc.). Lo and behold, the reset voltage to AD9 on the Genesis chip was low. Of course, in this state, the CPU will not operate at all. Tracing back, the 3.3v line was normal at the Vcc side of R365, but low on the collector of Q17. If you place your DVM across where the pads for SW1 (reset switch) would be mounted (BTW, it was never placed on the board) you can see if you have the 3.3v there. If not, I have your failure - further testing showed U24 was not operating properly. A visual inspection of the device confirmed it. If you look at yours closely (you may have to use a powerful magnifing glass) you may notice a bubble and crack on the top of the device. Mine was burned, but not to a noticeable degree. It did have a deep crack in the top, though.

Of course, as the chip got hot and failed over time, it would randomly reset the CPU (which would explain all the intermittent failures of the TV turning off and on) until it finally shorted out completely, forcing the reset line to a constant low (reset) state. I suspect this is the cause of all the failures on this model where the unit is dead. All the people that are charging to repair the board on eBay have quite a deal, and they'll never reveal that this is the actual issue. I'm here to help everyone that owns one of these to get theirs running again, for free!

The next issue was finding the replacement part. Good luck with that. Unlike when I worked at Sony, where we had every part imaginable, they don't supply this Reset IC. I made multiple phone calls to KCP/Tech Support and they couldn't give me a Sony 9-digit part # for this device, as the number doesn't exist! They want to sell you a $250 MCB instead of supplying repair parts! I went round and round with them on this, and will have to pursue finding the part (if it's possible at all) by calling someone I know in the Technical Dept. soon.

IMO, it's quite outrageous that they don't supply these parts. The company has really changed since I worked there. Turns out they moved their parts call center to the Phillipines. It used to be in Fort Myers, FL. They have consolidated operations in the global downturn, I guess. Anyway, I looked all over Google to find a retail source for the ASM810JEURF chip, and all I can find is large quantity distributors of the device. In quantity, the part cost is $0.15! So they are selling an expensive MCB assembly for a part that costs far less than a dollar. This really frosts my a$$.

This IC is made here in California by Alliance Semiconductor in Santa Clara. I may contact them to find out if there's any way to buy it retail or in smaller quantities. I am also researching replacement devices at this time, and will post back when I come up with a good substitute. I have a spec sheet on the parameters of the IC and might get lucky.

Meanwhile, believe it or not, you can just remove the U24 chip off the board, and you may find the TV works just fine. Mine sprang to life as soon as I took out the chip! However, it still should have the chip replaced, as it serves to keep the CPU operating properly during reset (power on) and during voltage spikes or brownout conditions. So don't blame me if you leave the chip off the board and the unit acts flaky :-)

This also begs the question, how are the guys on eBay that are selling the "repair service" on this board getting the part? Or are they just removing U24 and letting it go at that? I have no idea, but I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case.

I sincerely hope this information helps someone, and saves them some money. If anyone has some questions you'd like to ask, you can e-mail me at mill3ww (at) hotmail (dot) com. If I can be of assistance, I'll try to help out. I can't troubleshoot over the internet, however, so please don't expect me to do this. If you'd like to contact me just like to say "Thanks", that'd be nice too.
