Hello again,
Crutchfield notified me of a SONY alert on the STRDA-5300ES yesterday. Apparently units with serial numbers lower than 8805018, and that DONT have a green dot next to the power cord input, MAY need a firmware upgrade. Complete details at: http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/news-item.pl?mdl=STRDA5300ES&news_id=231 I spoke to SONY this morning and was told that the receiver would have to demonstrate one of the specific problems in the alert before an exchange would be made. They also said the exchange program would be in effect for quite awhile as long as they had all information on file. So, for those of you with affected units, it would behoove you to check your serial numbers and proceed accordingly.
Hope all is well with you guys, Scott

Great job Scott, thanks. My 5300 is an Australian model, but I have no green dot and my serial number starts with 55, so looks like I may be up for an upgrade! I've been having troubles with the HDMI conversion from Component on my 777ES, so hopefully this fixes that as well. (Unless its a Reg1/NTSC problem instead)

I would recommend calling and getting all your info on file ASAP. SONY wouldnt do the Advanced Exchange becuase I was honest and said I didnt know for sure that I would have a problem (naturally have to actually have a BluRay or HD-DVD player to know for sure). But they did say that the exchange is good for "awhile..." She also said it was important to have my serial number, address, purchase date, etc on file.

Oh, it needs one. See my post from the first week or two after these hit the street here. I've been hounding sony for weeks saying this was a problem. Glad to see something got through all those CSRs who can't speak english... Just ordered my replacement unit from Sony. Hopefully this will fix the problems.

Craig- Do you have the STR DA5300ES or the DA5300ES?
Only North American Sony Receivers have serial numbers which begin with 88 all others outside the region that I've heard of begin with 55. I don't know how universally the green dot was used on the 5300ES series though.
Has it been established that this particular problem extends outside the North American region?
