Hello all (just joined today). I am optimistic that this could be an adjustment or tweaking issue..If this is a repair or equipments failure I am in the wrong forum..please accept my apology for the error. I am seeking some assistance with a KD-34XBR960N (assembled and purchased 11/05). This CRT T/V initally was incredible, however; within the last 8 months it has been failing and I am not sure what to do. I thought there might be a few folks in this forum who can assist me. The T/V's image is wonderful for approximatly 1.5 hours, then the screen will flash a bright white light at random intervals and then continue to display an undistorted beautiful image. After a greater length of time, the screen will flash black & green bands and for a brief second or so it will lose its horizontal synchronization, then it resumes displaying a wonderful picture. The frequency of these "flashes" increase and eventually (within 2 + hours) the disturbances become too annoying to continue watching the T/V. My first thought was to identify the cause. The T/V is connected to COMCAST's cable box a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 HD via an HDMI connection. I checked the connections, contacted Comcast and with their assistance ruled that source out as a cause. I turned off the cable box and used a direct cable feed via the alternative antenna input and the screen exhibited similar disturbances, after a period of time. I turned off all sources and just left the T/V on without any input and after awhile it emitted white flashes. The T/V was installed in a large cabinet with adequate ventilation by the retail vendor of the Sony. That might rule-out overheating as a possible cause.) At this point, I am aware I will have to call a service technician. My last experience with a Sony Wega was with a 32" model, it lasted 3 years then the picture went red and the Service Technician told me the replacement screen would cost $800.00 to purchase and the total bill including labor and sales tax would exceed the purchase price of a new T/V set. Please comment and thanks for your patience in reading this lengthy post.

i don't know an answer to your problem but i am having terrible troubles with my 36xbr400 and so i decided to dump it and buy a kd-34xbr960. hence my response to you. firstly; where did you get your television to buy and at what price (location; tele.#, email address; etc) secondly; are you sure it wasn't a reconditioned model? what's the difference between the kd-34xbr960 and the kd-34xbr960N ?

Is the flash of bright white light a horizontal band across the face of the picture tube. Do you hear arcing? If so, there is a service bulletin that MAY be of help titled "CRT Arcing, Flashing at higher altitudes". It involves adjustment of a spark gap and cleaning and reapplying RTV around the base of the picture tube. It doesn't look easy. If you would like a copy, go to your Inbox at the bottom of the left column and send me (jehill) a private message (PM) indicating what is desired and including your email address and I will send it to you.

The set was purchased from Rand's TV i (732) 255-3213. 1843 Hooper Ave, Toms River, NJ I paid about $ 1,300.00 for the set. It had a manufactured date of 11/05 and I bought it 11/05. The set was not reconditioned. The flashing was accompanied by an arcing "snap". Sony informed me this model had a 2 year Sony parts and labor warantee. Although the Sony authorized South Jersey Repair Service was unaware of the 2 year parts and labor Sony warrantee for this model, once they spoke to a Sony Consumer Rep. they replaced the CRT. The "N" refers to a non-reflective filter that is on the tube, it reduces glare. The tube the service company replaced, did not have the "N" filter, the replacement tube has a purple cast to it rather than the original flat black finish. Take away message...it pays to keep calling Sony until you speak to their consumer reps...the authorized service companies are not fully informed about all of the products.
