I was able to download the STRDA3200ES/DG1000 service manual from Sony India (AP) today!  The STRDG1000 is only available in the USA.  A quick scan of the block diagram reveals no apparent differences.

So the DG-1000 does actually exist! But are you saying it will be indentical to the 3200? That would make it ES-level stuff....

Having ES Specs and ES performance will make it ES level equipment.

Compare the DA3200ES' 130 wpc @.7% THD rated at 1k hz to the specs of your DE997B and see how they stack up! You may be suprised!

Yes, the two receivers are virtually identical.  I just scanned the parts list and discovered different part numbers for the STRDA3200ES US/CAN and STRDG1000 Digital and Video boards.  The only way to determine the differences would be to study the schematics for those boards, which I haven't had time to do.

John- I realize that you haven't had much time to study the schematics, but do you have any general ideas on why they had to increase the THD they measured at to .7% (up from .09%) and narrow the test bandwidth to 1k hz (down from 20-20k hz) in order to get the power spec they were looking for out of the DA3200ES?

Maxx, take a closer look at the specs that I posted here, specifically the following spec:

    Rated Power Output at Stereo Mode (8 ohms 20 Hz - 20 kHz, THD 0.09%): 120 W + 120 W

The answer is that the 0.7% THD spec that you quoted is required to  post a rated power of 130 W.

I just determined why there are different part numbers for the STR-DA3200ES US and the STRDAG1000!  The differences are needed to account for the fact that the STRDG1000 doesn't' include the CIS board, meaning that the following features aren't included:

    1.  IR IN, IR OUT 1 and IR OUT 2 jacks.
    2.  CTRL S IN and OUT jacks.
    3.  RS232C port.
    4.  TRIGGER OUT MAIN jack.

I missed this when I scanned the block diagrams.

A Sony Analog Receiver with ES Grade Output Devices has a rated power output at Stereo Mode(8 ohms 20-20k hz, THD0.05%): 120 W + 120 W. Even my DB 930 is rated the same as this.

The answer is that the 0.7% THD spec that you quoted is required to  post a rated power of 130 W.

Since the traditional Sony ES Class Receivers are rated at 120 wpc @ 0.05% THD 20-20k hz it stands to reason that they were using different Output Devices than the DA3200ES is currently using.

John- I found these specs on the DA5200ES from Sonystyle USA-

Audio Impedance: 8 Ohm Channel Power Rating: 120 Watts X 7 Amplifier Power (8 ohms, 1Khz, 0.7% THD)

From these specs it appears as though they needed the same .7% THD and 1k hz test tone to get 120 wpc from the DA5200ES.

Those are the same ratings quoted from the Sony Style link for the STR-DA3200ES.  I am puzzled why the ratings for the STR-DA5200ES would be the same.  I am assuming that the  power level for those conditions is 130W, not 120W, the same as determined for the STR-DA3200ES.

John- Its a little early to expect definitive answers I guess. I was just a little shocked because I've never seen Sony rate their Receivers like this before.

John - I just bought the STR-DG1000 last week, and wouldn't mind having the SM for it.  I went to the Sony India website, but its down for an upgrade.  Anyway, can you email me the STR-DG1000/STR-DA3200ES Service Manual PDF?  I'd quite appreciate it.  Send it to jhirsche1<at>yahoo<dot>com.  Thanks!!!!

I do not distribute copies of service manuals because it is in violation of US copyright laws.  However, you may purchase the STR-DA3200ES/DG1000 service manual for $31.39 here.  Use the Part or Accessory Number search to locate part number 988737801.

I also have the 3200ES/DG1000 service manual in PDF. But as it's from a Sony site as well, I can't share it with others.
