Just got the Sony KDS-60A2000. This is the 60 inch model. The Hi Def pictures are really nice. I can't say the same about the non Hi Def channels. The vast majority are somewhat blurry, especially faces which are not sharp or really clear. I had a 30 inch Sony Trinitron and the faces and backround were much sharper. The picture is almost akin to when you tape a dvd on a very slow speed.
This TV is connected using an HDMI cable from a Direct TV Hi Def box from satellite dish.
Is this normal? What could be the cause of this, the picture size? Is there anything i can do to fix this? Do plasmas recieve non Hi Def pictures better?
Thank you for any help on this matter.

purplengold14,
How is the box set to output non-HD channels, in thier native format or at a set resolution? Whichever way it is set, try the other way, you may see an improvement.

Toli,
Thank you very much for the tip. When you say box I'm assuming you mean my Direct tv satellite box. Is there a switch on it labeled non-hi def channel or is there some type of menu i have to access? I'm at work now and will attempt your fix when I get home.

purplengold14,
It is probably a setting in the box's video menu. What model DIRECTV receiver do you have?

purplengold14,
First, set the proper FORMAT (format button on front of receiver) for your TV with the format button on the front of the H-10. Then, press the RESOLUTION button on the front of the H-10 to cycle through all resolutions to find the one that works best with your TV.

Toli,
On my satellite reciever, it has a power buttom, then a led lite list of 480p, 720p and 1080i. The 1080 is always lite because this tv converts signal to 1080. Next it has these buttons, resolution, then guide, then menu, then select, then active, then information and lastly exit. There is no format button.
Can i do what you ask using the buttons i have available?
Thanks again for your input.
Purplengold14.

purplengold14,
Yes, with the resolution button. It will cycle through available formats. See pp. 34-35 of the H-10's user manual.

Toli,
I did cycle through the various modes in the box. It had no appreciable effect on the picture. When I had my new satillite installed this week to get local channels in hi-def the tech said he has a 70 inch screen(not a Sony) and he said large screen pictures in non-hi def are a little blurry because of the screen size, so maybe thats just how it is. I dont know.

purplengold14,
Have you tried a component connection instead of HDMI, just to see if there may be an improvement?

Toli,
Excuse my ignorance but you will have to be more specific with me. In other words lead this dummy by the hand. Tell me what you mean by component conection and what i should do.

purplengold14,
A component connection uses a cable with three RCA connectors on each end, like this; .

I, too have recently purchased this same set. I love it!
As for your issues with pixellation:
I noticed that there was a HUGE improvement if I didn't attempt to blow everything up to fit the screes(in 480i/480p). There is an aspect ratio button on the remote. It will cycle through a few modes like zoom - widezoom - normal - fullscreen(?). Cycle through these until 480 pictures look 4x3 again. This set has a 16x9 aspect ratio, and when you blow up a std. def picture to 16x9, it looks...well, crappy.
Another option is to play with the DRC(Digital Reality Creation) settings. This is Sony's circuitry and software that is supposed to improve the 480 image when it is blown up onto the BIG screen.
I haven't even bought component(R-G-B) cables yet, so I am feeding a 480i signal to my set from my DVD player, and it looks pretty good! I watched 'Into the Blue' last night, and Jessica Alba's bikini lines looked painfully real! I purchased a DVP-NS3100ES along with the set, but I'm still awaiting delivery of my HDMI cables before I can try out its' upscaling abilities. Anyone tried this or the 9100ES with this set yet? Thoughts?
