Should I buy a STR-DA7100ES? I REALLY love this reciever and want to buy it SO bad. But I'm concerned, that Sony will not offer an update to the software, to allow it to switch 1080p.
I am trying to buy products that will be up-to-date for a long while to come. The other thing is, that I will be buying a 1080p TV with at least 2 HDMI inputs. So I could probably get away with not needing full 1080p capability in my reciever.

SNY4ME,
IMO, the least amount of everything (i.e. wiring, equiptment) between the source (i.e. STB, DVD player) and the TV the better. I can't tell you if you should by the STR-DA7100ES or not, but if I wanted it I sure would. The STR-DA7100ES and the possible soon-to-be STR-DA9100ES are on my short list right now, of replacement for my STR-DA7ES, when I decide I am ready.
So to me what signal the receiver would allow to pass through or not, is a moot point, as I connect all video directly to the TV.
The difference between the first two formats is that every other line is scanned in 1/60 second in the first format and the first or second half of the lines are scanned progressively in 1/60 second in the second format. Have you read anything that says what the 1080p frame rate will be? Maybe its only 30p! At any rate, the native format for LCos, LCD, DLP and plasma display devices has always been progressive. That's why the new DLP and SXRD displays are progressive. Its inherent in the display designs. The problem is that, until now, the resolution has always been less than 1080x1920. Are you sure that the STR-DA7100ES HDMI interface isn't compatible with a 1080x1920 60p input. My guess is that it's definitely compatible with a 1080x1920 30p input because its included in the ATSC standard.

Lyle- The DA7100ES is a great Digital Receiver and is selling for about 1/3 of what the illusive STR DA9100ES may sell for if it is ever released. Rumors of its availability started 9 months ago and we haven't seen a single one yet.
If you wait for the perfectly future proof Receiver you will be waiting forever because technology is advancing faster than compatable equipment can be made.

I understand completely. I'm not rying to future proof myself, but I don't want to buy something that by all rights is already out of date. Sort of, anyway. The funny thing is, that right now we have TV's that can display 1080p, but nothing that outputs 1080p. I'm sure Sony realised this when they realeased the 7100ES.

SNY4ME,
I heard back from my friend at Oade. Here is his response:
"Per the HDMI spec, all version of HDMI will support 1080P as far as transmission of data goes even though a display may not be able to display 1080P."
So what you are hoping for is true, but of course your display will have to support a 1080p signal. Also, if you are going to purchase a 7100ES, why not give Oade a call? They have really great customer service and prices. Click here for thier web site, which has thier number as well as thier product line, which includes many Sony and Sony ES products. Good luck and I hope that this helps.

SNY4ME,
No problem at all. If you do purchase a new receiver, please give us a review, let us know what (7100ES?....) you get and how it compares to what you had.

SNY4ME,
I didn't know that they didn't ship to Canada, before I told you that, but thier prices are great. I will email my friend at Oade and see if there is anything I can do to help. I will post back if I have anything to add. It's at least worth a shot.

Lyle, I bought mine off ebay from BuyRiteElectronics, brand new, it comes with full US (5 Year) warranty the only catch is that you have to send it to the US for any service on your dollar but they will ship it back for free. I paid about $1700 CDN all said and done. I figured with the extra 2 years warranty, and the over $1000 savings, it was well worth the possible inconvenience IF it ever needed service. Actually the money I saved on the 7100 paid for my 9100 (same place on Ebay) I think it's gone up since i bought it but it's still a far cry from the $3000+ CDN you would pay at the Sony Store to pick it up. I see they have it on ebay now, same store but the black one. Good hunting! SNY4ME,
I have heard back from Oade, they really won't to ship to Canada. It has something to do with the duties. But you have an option, do know someone near you, but on the U.S. side? Of course it would have to be someone that you trust.
