My candidate for the best Sony Digital front end ever would also be the Sony CDP R-10/ DAS R-10 which had an "S" version of Twin Link which fed the Clock back to the Transport via Optical Toslink making this combo virtually jitter free.

As for best all time Sony player I would nominate the incomparable ModWright/Sony DVP NS999ES.

I haven't heard the XA9000ES, but I have heard the $6,200 Audio Aero Capitole 24/192 upsampling CD player and the ModWright NS999ES easily sounded much better!

Mike here's a link to Dan Wright's Website.

There you can find a detailed description of the different levels of Modifications for the NS999ES that Dan does.

You will also find his email address if you have any questions.

Let's not overlook the Sony CDP R1/DAS R1 which is much more obtainable than the CDP R10/DAS R10 of which only 100 pairs were produced.

We only have one Member who owns this Dynamic Duo, but he says that he'll put their sound quality up against any Transport/DAC combo made.

For anyone who is interested, there currently is a DVP-NS999ES for sale on eBay. This great player is advertised new in an open box complete with all original packaging. There is two and a half days left on bidding and the current bid is a mere $112.50.

These players can sell for $800 used and could be a great buy for someone.

HERE is a link to the auction.

    Joe- Good eye!

The last time I was over at Dan Wright's workshop he had an entire stack of NIB Sony DVP NS999ES players just waiting to be Modified.

I got the chance to hear a ModWright NS999ES late last year and it is definately the best player I've ever heard and that includes the $6,200 Audio Aero Capitol with 24/192 upsampling and the $3,800 Sonic Frontiers SFCD-1 with discrete Tube outputs.

    Maxx,

I remember you talking about the stacks of DVP NS999ES that Dan had when you visited. Do you happen to remember what a ModWright NS999ES was going for directly from Dan?

Also, in 24 hours the NS999ES on eBay has more than doubled in price. The last few minutes of that auction should be a bidding frenzy. If I wasn't so pleased with the sound of my Cambridge Azur 640c, I'd be over there bidding myself.

    Joe

Joe- There are 4 different levels of Modification from Basic to Platinum Level for the NS999ES and they are each priced differently.

I would imagine that the most economical way to go would be to buy a used on as you have found here and have it Modified.

Thanks for the reply Maxx. I am sure that costs will vary depending on what Dan creates.

The internet is loaded with articles and reviews of this artists work and they all sing his praises.

Dan does great work all right! Its just him and one assistant on the workbench so everything depends on the quality of the work they do.

If you go to the Audio Asylum's Digital Drive and enter Dan Wright's name in the search engine it will instantly max out with the praises of satisfied customers from around the world.

Not bad for one guy and a hired solder slinger!
