I am unable to get the Digital music from my cable box without turning on my TV. My hookup and system is as follows: Cable box to TV via HDMI; cable box to home theater via optical. home theater to tv via progressive cables. I turn on the cable box, tune to digital music, then the home theater and go to digital. I receive nothing until I turn on my tv, Once music is playing I can turn the tv off and it will continue to play. I did notice that if I disconnect the HDMI cable that it works just fine. Should I get rid of the HDMI and go to component cables? or what?

Welcome to Agoraquest! When you say, "...then the home theater and go to digital", are you sure that you are selecting the correct digital input to the home theater? The reason that I ask is that I wouldn't expect the digital optical output from the cable box to be affected by the HDMI connection to the TV. If it is, maybe there is something in the cable box configuration that has to be changed.

I need "digital in" on my home theater in order to get the digital music from the cable box. If I disconnect the HDMI cable from the TV everything works ok. When I plug it back in the music goes away until I either turn the TV on(until I hear music) then I can turn it off. It appears to me that the HDMI is creating a "marriage" with the TV and taking over. The only problem I have with this is That I have a LCD projection Tv and turning it on and off shortens the life of the bulb which is an expensive item to replace. I don't understand why the music doesn't go directly to the home theater thru the optical cable since it is hooked up that way.

What "home theater" system are you using? Is it include a stand alone receiver or a combination SACD/CD/DVD player/receiver? What is the manufacturer an model number?

My theater is a Samsung HT-WP38 and has a DVD player, with AM/FM tuner. It can recognize all the lastest in dolby and other sound systems.

IMHO, what you are experiencing is a quirk of the cable box. I would consult with you cable company's technical support and see what they say about what you describe. It certainly puzzles me why the logic in the box would switch off the optical output if it doesn't see a receiver (the TV) for the HDMI signal.
