I wanted to bring this thread back briefly to the original subject which was first impressions of the 775. I'm in total agreement with Selsyn-this thing rocks in terms of video! We have now watched three DVDs and even though I am viewing them on a "legacy" SONY XBR squared, the images are heads-above the older unit (DVP-S560D).

Additionally, the 775 runs SIGNIFICANTLY cooler than the 560D. I can now understand the probable reason for the fuse problem on the older unit and the resulting class action suit against SONY (http://www.sheller.com/Practice.asp?PracticeID=119 So, anyone with one of the three models listed in that suit, BEWARE. Symptoms will include DVDs skipping, stopping, refusing to play, returning to the beginning of the movie, etc.

    sounds great!

i just bought the 775 as well. im just using the standard rca cables that came with it. i have a 32hs420 hdtv connected to it.

i was thinking of getting the monster m1000v. are they worth it for my setup or should i just get like 20 dollar audioquest ones from bestbuy? the salesman at best buy said that the monsters last longer, quality wise than standard 20 dollar cables....

    Hotcross,

I tend towards S-Video rather than composite cables in all cases.

Additionally, the m1000v seem quite expensive.

I'm using a high-quality S-video cable with the 775 and am quite happy with the result.

hotcross component video connection will give you a better picture on your set. Your TV is also capable of receiving a progressive signal.

$20 for a set of Audioquest sounds like a steal. Make sure you use component video cables. Acoustic Research and Belkin also make affordable component cables.

The Audioquest YIQ1 Component Video cable is a true 75 ohm Video cable with 22 ga SP LGC conductor and ground wires-

Thanks boulderskies for the link to the class action site.  I signed up but am not holding my breath.  I just got my Microsoft class action settlement of $10.  lol

I just recently replaced my DVP-S530D because it was skipping, stopping, refusing to play, returning to the beginning of the movie, etc.  I've suffered for years thinking I was insane.

I finally replaced it with a 775.  I highly recommend this new DVD player.  All the movies my 530D won't play all work now.  I can rent movies with confidence now that my player will read them.  The picture is awesome on my old XBR.

After pirating my nicer cables off my VCR, I hooked up the SACD to the Multi Channel 1 input on my receiver.  Then I tried the Dark Side of the Moon Hybrid SACD.  Very cool sound but I wouldn't have done it had I not already had cables.  For me, I don't think the remixed SACD sound is worth the extra cable cost.  Maybe if more SACDs start appearing I'll try more of them.

Now that the analog multi channel input is used I can compare and contrast the sound of the DVD processor with the 5000ES.  At the same volume setting, the MultiChannel analog seems to be much quieter.  Meaning, I have to turn the volume up significantly to reach the same audio level as the toslink input while watching DVD movies. (FYI SACDs won't play through the toslink. You must use the 6 analog cables.)   Movies definately sounds better using the 5000ES processors and toslink input.

I currently have the new 775 hooked up using the component cables to my 5000ES and Maxx's highly recommended glass toslink.  (Still haven't tried to get my video problems fixed with the 5000ES but component DVD connection still works fine.)

thanks guys for suggestions. maxx, i know you are big on the monster 1000v, do you think those are worth it over the audioquest? those audioquest look cool, kinda pricey but if the 1000v are only 25 bux more....

    thanks!

    Mully,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Interesting stuff. I too have the 775 but have not activated the SACD circuit yet. I guess I'm kinda saving that pleasure until I get the on-going speaker wire upgrade taken care of. Its interesting that you dont think SACD sound is worth the cable/CD cost. Perhaps its because it's a new sensation for you. I've heard nothing but good things from others.

Also, did you notice that DVDs that have been playing for a couple hours are MUCH cooler coming out of the 775 than your old 530? No doubt, heat build-up was a major contributing factor to the problems the older units had.

hotcross- I also use Cinemaquest SP-LGC Video Wire (made in the USA by Audioquest) and it works as well as the Chinese made Monster Video wire, but it has much more substantial die cast connectors instead of the machine stamped ones the that Monster uses.

When I went to the page you listed all they had were Bose Lifestyle systems listed, but if you can get the Audioquest YIQ1 Component Video cables from them at a discount price I say go for it.

    Maxx-
Yes.  The $30 glass toslink is a bargain at that price.  Its not much more money than the cheapest plastic toslinks.  It does seem to sound better with better highs.  However, after reading many threads and blogs I just don't think it should sound better.  After all, isn't it just transmitting 1s and 0s?

    Boulderskies-

I can't say I ever noticed my DVDs being warm to the touch with the old 530 player.
