Hi everyone, I'm new here, but I've spent all afternoon scanning the forums and, while I have found postings of similar content, I haven't found any answers.
I've had my 40XBR800 for about a month now, and I have to join the love/hate group.
I love the size, and I love how it looks on HDTV. Every once in awhile, while watching HDTV, I'll spot some pixel blurring when there is rapid movement, but I've always thought that was in the signal, not the TV (after reading posts in this forum, perhaps I am wrong about that).
However, when playing DVDs through my Sony Prog Scan player (component Monster cables) - which is 95% of my use for this TV - I am not satisfied. My previous TV was a 36XBR and the picture was much sharper. On the 40, the edges of images are grainy/pixelated, especially in the background. I notice it quite a bit on faces and things. Closeups are very sharp; background is fuzzy, and soft - almost blurry. It almost makes me feels as though I'm watching VHS.
To make matters more confusing, both my HDTV box and my DVD player are running through my receiver, into the TV through the same component cable, and into the same input. Wouldn't this suggest that any resolution issues associated with the DVD player would also appear when viewing HDTV?
As I see it, the only explanation woudl be that either my DVD player has gone south or that the cables connecting it to the receiver have gone south. But neither is likely, since both were working great on the 36XBR I used to have...
I also have noticed a greater degree of edginess/graininess when playing my Xbox, which is also connected with component cables but is running into the opther input on the TV. However, I'm not as certain that the resolution on the 36 was any better with the Xbox as I am certain about the difference in DVDs.
I've seen lots of complaints about graininess on this forum, but mine seems a little different than most. In my case, HDTV looks great, but DVDs do not (and I could care less about regular cable on this set).
I have used two diffferent video optimizers, if that helps.
Any thoughts? Shoudl I return this heavy bastard, or fiddle with the settings, or lower my expectations???
Much appreciated in advance, Joe
