I just bought the last SONY KV36XBR800 from Good Guys.

The picture has a definant bow in the bottom (we used to call this pin
    cushion)

I did not notice this in the store, mainly because thy never had it in letter boxed mode. I am quite dissapointed after the cost of this set.

Since I did not pop for the $500 extended warrenty and the Sony warrenty does not cover adjustments I am on my own for this.

I understand there is a service menu and these adjustments can be done through this menu.

How do I get into the sercive menu?

And do they still call the adjustment top/bottom pin

    Neither one worked

    Gazz,

Considering that you just bought the TV from Good Guys, did you try talking to them about the bowing problem. They are a reputable brick and mortar store and should stand behind their products. I'm sure you probably paid at least $1,500 for your set and if they can't replace it with the same set than they should give you a credit applied to another TV. If this is a new purchase it should be their problem not yours. A friend recently purchased a Diamond Screen Hitachi from Tweeter's and had a similar problem. After a phone call, Tweeter sent a tech to his house and solved the problem at no cost to my friend. It's worth a phone call.

I got into the service menu, turns out I had the remote in the wrong mode

But there are a lot more settings that any of the docs I found here list.

Most have just a 3 or 4 letter abrevation.

Any hints on a service manual?

The service manual is 300 pages. If you want to buy one, call the Sony folks in Kansas City. Address and phone should be in owners manual. Even with the manual you'll discover that they don't tell you what the 3 and 4-letter codes mean or what changes if you change the values. Many can be inferred from the code e.g. VSIZ. Others you can figure out because they're in the same group of codes e.g. UVLN (upper vertical linearity). Others I've never figured out.
You should have the Digital Video Essentials DVD or another source of still patterns onscreen before you even touch the service adjustments.
Don't even THINK of changing any values until you write down what's already there. You save adjusted values by pressing MUTE + ENTER on the remote. The adjustments you need are mainly in categories 2170D_1, and 2. On the remote: 2 and 5 scroll through categories, 1 and 4 scroll through items within categories, and 3 and 6 scroll the values. Sometimes there's only one value for a particular code. Sometimes there's several values for a code depending on the aspect ratio or input or signal source or the vivid/pro/etc setting. So be very cautious.

Here is a  link to part of a service manual in pdf format for an older model sony set.

    brian.vallelunga.com/sony/ServiceManualLite.pdf

It will give you instructions for the basic adjustments, although the item abbreviations and values may be different for your model. It will help you decide if you want to buy one for your model?

Would the cost of a service call be comparable to the cost of a service manual?
