This is just great. I just upgraded two months ago from the 930 home deck to the 940, and my car MDX-62 changer to the 66 (which is supposed to arrive tomorrow (I'M NOT KIDDING)) to finally take advantage of the longer play discs so I could put the 3 new Rolling Stones DVD concerts on to one disc each, and I just read about this. I can't help but laugh!

Jean-Yves,
Thanks for telling us! Sounds really great. I think the new units look a bit ugly compared to previous units (although the top model might be the exception)
Micknkeef,
3 DVDs on a MD? That sounds like you're plpanning on using the LP4 mode. Perhaps I'm pouring salt into your wounds here, but be advised that LP4 equals poor sound quality.

it's simply the MD revolution !!!!
upload is now possible and you can record as well at the PCM format !
1.4 MBps !!
The old MD blanks can be reformatted in "Hi-MD" with 300MB capacity (instead of 170MB)
Sounds terrific ! and the price for 1 MD 1GB is 7$. Players/recorders are announced for April.
I did no see anything about decks for the moment.
One advice : WAIT BEFORE BUYING ANY MD PORTABLE PLAYER/RECORDER !

Are you sure all kinds of upload is possible? I read somewhere (minidisc.org forum?) that it had to be audio recorded through the microphone. Possibly this can be cracked, but I wouldn't bet money on the fact that everything is uploadable.
My E909 has been behaving a bit bad since I slipped in the snow here and fell on it. Perhaps it was a sign that I need a HiMD instead?

Hi Tiny
I guess I wasn't clear about how much I was putting on each disc. I meant that I was putting one of each DVD on one disc each. I've decided LP2 is passable for background and, hopefully, in my car. I put the Eagles box set on one disc in LP4 and it was not very good. Each of the Stones concerts around 90 minutes or so though so LP2 worked out great. It's just a bummer that you can't send a digital signal from DVD to MD. I selected the PCM track on the disc and even set the digital out on the player from DD to PCM but I still get the "Can't Copy" message on the MD deck. I guess I'll have to save up for that MCaudio SCMS stripper. Tom

Ok, then I understand. Sounds like a good plan (I think LP2 would work just fine for the car). Where did you manage to find a JB940 btw? Those came out in 2000 IIRC.
As for a solution to your digital output desire. All I can think of is to rip the DVDs in your computer and burn that to CDR (or CDRW) and record from those. A soundcard w/ digital out might also leave out the SCMS signal if you wanted to hook it up directly.
A third solution would be if you have a portable recorder as well and it has NetMD capability. Then you could rip the track on the comp and transfer them to the MD.
One more new feature of Hi-MD: Transfer speed from computer to MD is promised to be 100x real-time...

Micknkeef : I encountered the same problem concerning this "cannot copy" message. I solved this problem buy using an external soundcard (SB MP3+) which has optical in/out. I play the DVD with my PC and connect the PC to the digital in of my MDS-JB980 via this soundcard. Result : no more "cannot copy" ! Moreover this soundcard is cheap (around 50 euros !)
Tiny_Turtle : you are right : upload is only possible from the mic. However recording without compression (PCM) is great isn't it ?

Hi Guys,
Thanks a lot for all of your suggestions. I'm not very computer savvy but I'll have to see if my roomate's computer has one of those digital outs. I know it has a DVD rom in there somewhere. I do have a net md portable but I've never transferred songs to it using a computer.
As for the 940, I found it on eBay and somehow, got even more than it cost for my 930. Then I found a refurbished 66 model changer for my car for about $230-something and just sold my 62 model for about $150. Turns out I upgraded both and broke even!
I don't know if you guys are aware, but here in the US, which I would think would be Sony's biggest market we are down to only being offered the bottom of the line home deck, a $300 combo CD/MD deck, and then the various walkman models. We no longer have the MDS 900 series line. It's pretty frustrating!
Tom
