Ok...here is the scoop. I have had a STR-SE501 for about 2 years now. After peeling through the manual more times than I should have, I have come here to beg for help from those who know much much more than I do about this. This is basically what I am working with.
Can I hook the coax cable from the wall into the STR-SE501?
I have a sylvania dvd player with digital coax on the back.
I have a RCA vcr (cannot find the model number) but it does have 2 rca? (red, white, yellow) outs on it
I have my playstation 2 I want hooked up to all of this.
I have spent a little time trying to figure all of this out by scraping the net for help
Any help, info, theory, basic knowledge, even a few "yes you are really stupid you dork!" will fit just fine.
I forgot to mention that the only connection my TV has is a coax plug on the back (I have another tv with rca and coax)
Thanks in advance.

Your Sony STR SE-501 does not have a modulated signal input nor a Tuner in it that will demodulate the cable channels carried on the cable coax, but your VCR does.
Connect the cable to the VCR and use its tuner to send the signal out of the RCA jacks to your Sony Receiver and you will be in business. If it only has one Audio jack then it is mono. You can use a Y-splitter to turn it into 2 channels.

Momiage,
On the TV that only has a coax plug input, run a short coax cable from the coax output of your VCR to the input coax of the TV.
On the TV that has RCA and coax inputs, run a RCA cable from the yellow RCA output from the VCR to the yellow RCA input on the TV.
