JASON69: SonyStyle's website has a "dealer locator" feature for the speaker....assuming you're in the USA.

Hello fellow Sony fans. I have not been here for sometime.I hope all is well in Sonyland. I need the help of evryone that owns SSX-ED series speakers. I also need to bump this thread up to the top so that someone I know can read it.

If you didn't already know I work at a Sony Store here in Calgary Canada. On Dec.29/03 I sold a customer an "AWESOME" home theater package consisting of Sony's best equipment. He bought a STRDA9000ES receiver, DVPNS999ESS DVD player, 2 SAWX700's subwoofers, 4 SSX70ED speakers for front and rears, and a SSCNX70ED for a center channel speaker. Pretty awesome don't you think? He previously bought a KV40XBR800 TV.

If you've read threw this thread you already know that I truly believe in these speakers. So much so I own them myself. In fact 3 out of 9 sales people in my store bought them.

Here is the problem. Because the distribution on these speakers is so limited he has not taken delivery of them yet.You can understand the frustration he must be feeling,I know that if I was in his shoes I would be seriously pissed.I have just been informed that they are going to arrive in our warehouse on April 8th/04.That's more than a 3 month wait.

I quess what I'm trying to do is convince him that the wait will be worth it. He'll have an excellent sounding system which will be quite rare in this part of the world. I know that there have not been many 9000ES receivers sold in Canada that's for sure

The quality of the parts used inside these speakers is unbelievable. I think Sony sells the SSX70ED's at a loss just to get them into the market. On Feb.24th we experienced a power surge with rolling blackouts here in Calgary. It sent my Pre/Pro into a frenzy that caused it to send a buzz threw the system at full volume. It blew all 5 of my tweeters. Wholesale cost on the tweeters is $510.00 CDN each oouch. Just goes to show that Sony was not messing around when they built the speakers. I believe they are one of those rare Sony products in which Sony goes all out to show the world what they are capable of.

Anyway Don if you are reading this I believe that you own something special, you just don't know it yet. Try and hang in there if you can.

So how about it fellow SSX-ED series speaker owners, what do you think he should do? Any comments on your experience with your SSX-ED speakers you would like to share?

    Great!

What is your email & I'll send you pictures of what the inside looks like.

I emailed Claudio, like four times but he never posted them. There is 10 images. Mabie you can help get them up.

This is what I wrote: SSX90 EXPOSED the inside story

Just bought the new ES flagship tower. Before I even hooked it up I had to see what it looked like. It’s 70+lbs. Looks great! Very similar in looks and sound to the new B&W 703. The mid chamber had the tweeter x-over and it was sealed in it’s own chamber. It was constructed of some sort of particleboard on the front baffle board It had a heavy dose of foam and topped off with polyfill. The driver was made of the same Kevlar as my B & W 604s2 mids. Its not that weird fabric that lower end Sony’s have.

Then cracked open the woofer chamber. Wow! Another X-over for the Mid. Heavly braced. The screws go through the metal mounting ring. Through the driver, through the baffle board , and into the internal bracing. There is foam sandwiched between the outer cabinet walls and the bracing. Finaly I opened the bottom driver and saw the sub x-over. And more bracing. The drivers have the shielding cup over the magnates but the mid doesn’t. It’s topped off with a tweeter that’s in it’s oune compartment metal on the top and MDF on the bottom.

All in all I was amazingly pleased with the sound and it’s not even broken in yet. It is very loud. Up to 100db’s on my RS db meter there was no distortion. Very clear and clean but little on the bright side, similar to the new B & W 703’s. Very good looks, sound & build.

I have the SSK series, I'm curious about similarities and differences. They look like they are intended to be similar as they have the same model numbers aside from the K replacing the X (ex.: the SSK90EDs have dual 6.5 woofers like the SSX90EDs and the SSK70EDs have one 6.5 inch woofer like the SSX70EDs) and the SSK series has the ES warrenty slip enclosed.

    Hello everybody!

Am a hifi enthusiast from Norway, and I recently purchased the SS-X90ED for my stereo setup.

First of all, these are extremely well built speakers, and they look like a million bucks.

Mine are in wood finish with a gray front grill.

I was told by the reseller that these speakers need a very long burn in period (200-300 hours) to sound their best. I was warned about that "out of the box sound" would be flat and unexciting. They were right. They sounded very flat, locked in and dry when first hooked up. They have now been up and running for about 50 hours, and the sound has improved dramatically. Soundstage is BIG, perspective is precise, midrange and tweeter sound very sweet and musical, but still i find the tonality to be a little bit to dark for my taste. The bass, which was dry and boring at first, has now become more dynamical, deep and rhythmic. Overall the sound is beginning to look very good, but still i miss some openness in the middle, sparkle in the top and snap/pitch in the lower end, but every time I listen to them the sound is better than before. I can also mention that the sound is VERY refined and has a expensive feel, they can also go very loud without distress.

There are very few tests to be found on these speakers. I admit that I’ll be curious to hear what "renowned" hifi journalists would have to say about it.

Am using Philips DVD963SA Yamaha RX-V 640 as preamp and Parasound HCA 750 poweramp.

A commentary in a german audio magazine:

That's a new one on me.  Meaning, its really difficult to believe.  I've never heard of speakers that improve there performance with age.

    rb,

You already know what I think about these speakers.

I had been selling Audio gear for over six years, and these speakers were the first to make me feel like I had to go ahead and buy them.  After selling the full lines of Mission, PSB, Energy, Jamo, Atlantic Technology, Definitive Technology, Celestion, JBL, Heco (blech!), and Nuance (double blech!), for many years, I finally slapped down the cash to upgrade my old Mission speakers to these Sony's.  Still to this day, when I tell people that I have Sony speakers, I quickly add that they are "Non-traditional" Sony speakers, since I have never really been impressed with Sony speakers before (other than the wonderful SSLA500's).  Without hesitation, I can say that they are the most natural sounding speakers that I have ever listened to, and the build on these suckers is amazing.

I am running them off of a Sony ES receiver (DA3ES), with a Panasonic RP91 DVD Audio/Video Player.  I have yet to Bi-Wire the speakers, which I anticipate to have a nominal effect, but at least it will make me feel better about my wiring (which currently consists of Monster MC-200).  One of the best improvements that I noticed in the sound was adding the Monster Power HTS3500 MKII.  Before I had this unit, I felt like adding more amplification, since my mid-bass kick was lacking in my big room.  After adding the Monster Power, I have no need to add more amps.  My only beef now, is the number of LED's that my system has!  At least I can turn down the receiver's lights, but the monster, and the Panasonic have bright Blue, Red and Green LED that are to the immediate right of my 51" projection TV (Sony).

Anyhay,  got a bit off topic here... but yeah, them speakers are very much worth the wait.  I had to wait for about 2 months to get my second set of 70's (for the rear),  but I wouldn't change my mind if I had the chance.

THEFAULKNER: Since you're Canadian and in audio sales, have you heard any comments about Paradigm's new Studio V3 series speakers? (The previous two Studio series got rave reviews).

If so, there's a big chance that it is a lot of stuff you never heard of.

Most speakers need a "burn in" period to sound their best. How long is dependent on the design of the drivers and the materials used. A complex X-over also need time to work it's best, as is the case with most delicate electronics used for sound reproduction.

Many speaker manufactures give notice of this fact in their manuals. B&W for example recommend at least 50 hours of burn in for their Nautilus range.

Both the midrange driver and bass drivers in the SS-X90 is extremely stiff. The midrange is also used as a bass/midrange in the SS-X30, in this design it therefore moves a lot. In the SS-X90 however it only handles an hz-spectrum from 450-3000hz. The result is no visible movement at all even with loud volumes, more time is therefore required to get the most of the unit's qualities.

My speaker’s sound characteristics have changed dramatically since I first hooked them up, especially in the mid and bass area.

I've joined the club.  I was "just looking" in my local SonyStore yesterday and they had a 30% off sale........
Needless to say I walked out with a pair of SS-X70ED and a SS-CNX70ED.

Now those of you that know me, know that I am a skeptic. I already had the SSX7PK which is the previous generation and good speakers in my opinion.
Now my ears are saying that they are GREAT - but my head is saying 'you know this is a placebo improvement!'.
Either way - I had a big smile on my face when I first cranked them up and that is the name of the game right?

    Craig,

Absolutely, that is the name of the game and I'm glad that your new pair of SS-X70ED and SS-CNX70ED put a smile on your face. Thanks for sharing a fantastic pic of your new front trio. I'll bet that they sound as good as they look. Hopefully your new job will allow you to stay home long enough to enjoy them. You do know however that you shouldn't have gone "just looking". It will get you every time.

Craig- Such nice speakers at such a deep discount is no placebo, its a real bargain. Like the old saying goes- "If it sounds good, then it is good", and I might add that if you can get it at a deep discount then its even better.
