Well I did my own very unscientific comparison between my old Sony Discman with a 1 bit d/a converter and my current almost new Sony dvd player with a multibit d/a converter.
It was impossible to use the same interconnects as the discman needs the mini plug to rca adapter.I used one I bought from radio shack a while back.It seems like a decent cable with gold plated connections.
The analog interconnects I used for the dvd player were of similar quality.
Now on to the test!
The results were immediate and drastic to me! It sounds rediculous to me just typing it but it's true.
The Discman wiped the floor with the dvd player with a soundstage that was very realistic and had very nice analog like sound that the dvd player did not.
The only negative part on the Discman was a low volume line out plug.I had to push the amp considerably more to get the same volume as the dvd player.
Ok so I know this does ovbiously not prove 1 bit d/a converters are better than multi bit converters as both of the converters used in my test are not even close to top of the line in ther respective fields.It proved to me that one can sound better than another in a particular situation.
Your results are consistent with most of the DVD players I've heard and I'm not surprised. However, what equipment did you use to verify that the volume was indeed the same? The difference in interconnects is a huge variable here. Those adapter cables have their own sound. And any time you use an adapter you knock down the signal somewhat. What you perceive as more real, may be because this is what you are used to.
I did a similar comparison with an early model PS1 awhile back. I must say I was VERY impressed for a gaming system. Its interface to play CDs ultimately convinced me to ditch the idea of actually using it. It will prove no doubt the same with your Discman. Keep if for listening on the go, coupled to set of Sony MDR-7506 headphones you may be surprised the level of realism you will achieve.
If you really wish to test the dynamic difference between a 16-bit and 1-bit Sony CD player get one of each from the same vintage and do a volume matched A/B comparison with all the same gear and interconnects. If my memory is correct the CDP-CE375 is 1-bit. Most of the other Sony's from this vintage are 16-bit.
Yeah I'm aware the test was absolutely flawed for several reasons but either way the Discman was an impressive listen.
The Dvd player was not.Ever.
