Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday at a downtown Manhattan residence, and police said drugs may have been a factor. He was 28. NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the Manhattan apartment believed to be his home. The housekeeper who went to let him know the masseuse had arrived found him dead at 3:26 p.m.

    gawkers

A large crowd of paparazzi and gawkers began gathering Tuesday evening outside the building on an upscale block in SoHo, where several police officers guarded the door.

The Australian-born actor was nominated for an Oscar for "Brokeback Mountain," where he met Michelle Williams in 2005. The two had lived in Brooklyn and had a daughter, Matilda, until they split up last year.

He most recently appeared in "I'm Not There," in which he played one of the many incarnations of Bob Dylan — as did Cate Blanchett, whose performance in that film earned an Oscar nomination Tuesday for best supporting actress.

Ledger was to appear as the Joker this year in "The Dark Night," a sequel to 2005's "Batman Begins." He's had starring roles in "A Knight's Tale" and "The Patriot," and played the suicidal son of Billy Bob Thornton in "Monster's Ball."

Ledger grew up in Perth, and began doing amateur theater at age 10. At 16, he moved to Sydney to pursue an acting career, quickly landing TV movie roles and guest spots on Australian television.

After several independent films and a starring role in the short-lived Fox TV series "Roar," Ledger moved to Los Angeles and costarred in "10 Things I Hate About You," a teen comedy reworking of "The Taming of the Shrew."

Offers for other teen flicks came his way, but Ledger turned them down, preferring to remain idle than sign on for projects he didn't like.

"It wasn't a hard decision for me," Ledger told the Associated Press in 2001. "It was hard for everyone else around me to understand. Agents were like, `You're crazy,' my parents were like, `Come on, you have to eat.'"

I heard about this tragedy on my way home from work this evening. It is such a shame when someone so young with so much life ahead of them dies.

    This from one hour ago:

Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger, 28, has died of a possible drug overdose involving sleeping pills in New York, police have confirmed.

The actor  was sick with pneumonia when he died, the TMZ.com website reports, saying it had been contacted by representatives of Ledger's family, who said they'd been told by police that the actor's death was accidental.

The representatives said the family was particularly distraught over media speculation that he may have taken his own life.

New York police said they could not confirm Ledger was suffering from pneumonia.

"This is the first I'm hearing that,'' Lieutenant John Grimpal, from the New York Police Department, told Macquarie Radio.

"The medical examiner, once he or she conducts an autopsy, will determine exactly the cause of death.''

He said police were continuing to treat the New York apartment, where Ledger was found dead, as a crime scene, but had initially ruled out foul play.

"Anytime someone dies, especially when they're so young, the detectives from the precinct conduct a thorough investigation just to rule out that criminality is not involved,'' Grimpal said. "Early on in the investigation it appears criminality is not involved.''e someone dies, especially when they're so young, the detectives from the precinct conduct a thorough investigation just to rule out that criminality is not involved,'' Grimpal said. "Early on in the investigation it appears criminality is not involved.''

    Rick,

I feel that the world shares your Aussies feeling of loss. As removed we all may have been from Heath Ledger personally, most of us can appreciate the grief of losing a child so young.
It makes one realize how precious our time is on this planet and how important it is to make the most of it.

You and your countrymen have my condolences.

    Joe

Examiner rules Ledger died of accidental overdose

Updated Wed. Feb. 6 2008 1:31 PM ET

    CTV.ca News Staff

Actor Heath Ledger died from an accidental overdose of a deadly cocktail of prescription drugs including powerful painkillers, sleeping pills and anti-anxiety medication, the New York City medical examiner's office has ruled.

"Mr. Heath Ledger died as the result of acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine," said medical examiner spokeswoman Ellen Borakove in a statement on Wednesday.

The drugs listed by Borakove are the generic versions of OxyContin, a time-release painkiller related to morphine, anti-anxiety drugs Valium and Xanax, and sleeping pills Restoril and Unisom. Hydrocodone is another name for the opioid Vicodin.

The release did not go into details of the concentrations of each drug found in his system, nor did it say whether some were more influential than others in causing his death. Borakove simply said it was the "cumulative effects" of the drugs combined.

In a statement released Wednesday through Ledger's publicist, his father Kim warned others of the dangers of mixing prescription pills.

"While no medications were taken in excess, we learned today the combination of doctor-prescribed drugs proved lethal for our boy," he said. "Heath's accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medication, even at low dosage."

An Oscar nominee, Ledger was highly revered among his colleagues and fans for his portrayal of a gay cowboy in "Brokeback Mountain."

He had just completed the role of the Joker in the upcoming Batman film, "The Dark Knight," and Bob Dylan in "I'm Not There," and had told the media that his immersion into the roles had made it difficult to sleep.

"Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night," he had said in the weeks before his death, adding that even after two Ambien sleeping pills he could only manage to sleep for an hour. "I couldn't stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going."

His most recent project was the $30 million Terry Gilliam film "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus."  He had just returned from working on the film in London when he died.

Ledger was found dead in his New York City rental apartment on Jan. 22, surrounded by six types of prescription pills. The 28-year-old had been awaiting the arrival of a masseuse, who found him face down on his bed and proceeded to call Mary-Kate Olsen three times before dialing 911.

The family of the Australian actor has spent the past few days mourning together in their hometown of Perth following the return of his parents, who spent two weeks in the United States following Ledger's death. They are reportedly planning a private service in their city.

    Thanks Joe,
For giving us closure in print to this said event.
Lets hope Heaths family and friends eventually find happiness again through Heaths daughter Matilda.

On a side note ,I'm not and never have been a fan of the T.V show ET and after seeing on our  news last week they were trying to portray Heath as a drug addict just for rattings and shock treatment, I don't think I ever will be....In a word "disgraceful" and I'm pretty sure thats the feelings of alot of other Aussies as well.

        Mav..... Rick.

    Rick,

I agree with you, ET (Entertainment Tonight) is a terrible show that exploits the famous for cheap sensationalism and shock value. It is a shame that the Ledger family has to be exposed to this trash while in their time of mourning.

IMO, the doctor(s) that prescribed this deadly cocktail of drugs to Heath should be under question.

    G'day Joe,
How precious our time is on this planet and most importantly in IMHO spending as much time as possible with "family" and our extended family, "our friends".

I sit here typing and reminiscing as i listen to my Dads favourite Antonio Carlos Jobin's "Wave" CD  ,which is very loud by the way in the background (because the house is empty for 5 minutes),remembering my family get togethers back in the 60's through into the 70's(great times great  partys ).So thank God we have familys, there isn't anything more inportant in life than our love ones and friends.

    Hello Rick,

Not only do we share the same family bonds and morals but also once again our taste in music. Being a guitarist myself, I am also a big fan of Carlos Jobim and love his guitar work, throw in Astrud Gilberto and I'm in Brazil heaven.

    JTTAR:

Heath Ledger's role in his last movie, THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS, which was still in production when he died, will be filled by Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell as a tribute to Ledger. It also stars Christopher Plummer.

I've got one of Jobim's CDs and also his Cd with Frank Sinatra.

    dragon53,

Thank you for the information on "THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS". One thing for certain, the recast of Heath Ledger by Johnny Depp will lend the role a strange twist.

I also own and enjoy the Carlos Jobim and Frank Sinatra CD which has some of Jobim's finest work. Some of my favorites on that CD are, Quiet Night of Quiet Stars, Meditation and How Insensitive. I find the Brazilian Bossa Nova sound smooth and relaxing.

Concerning Heath Ledger, the way I understand it, his role involved him entering a mirror and emerging into another world or dimension, This will allow Depp, Law and Farrell to play Ledger's role as he transforms into various incarnations.

As for Jobim, I agree about bossa nova---this is great easy listening music. In addition to the Jobim/Sinatra cd, I've got ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM'S FINEST HOUR---a 2000 digitally-remastered cd  which has great sound---especially since some of the tracks were recorded in 1963, 1967 and beyond. I've got some other cds with tracks also recorded in the 1960s-70s  which were remastered and they sound mediocre-to-terrible (Jerry Goldsmith's PATTON and THE BLUE MAX are examples).
If you like Jobim, some of the Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 cds are pretty good, too.
