| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | Control A1 cable and Sony seperates | Best I can recall the A1 control only did a couple of things: A) Function selection: since that happens on receivers the receiver would need to be in the loop. I think it turns on the power when a function is selected if it has a power switch that can be turned on by remote (and I think most Sony CD players aside from the megachangers and cassette decks do not have them). B) Synchro Recording: I think the receiver would need to be in the loop for that as well since it is dependent on the tape recorder knowing what input is about to be recorded from so it would know that you pres .. |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | STR-DA3200ES dB settings | Sony is not the only one. When I test drove the Denon its volume went to +20 (or somewhere around there). In this case there was a "volume limiter" that allowed the user to limit the volume to 0 DB (couldn't turn it up louder while the option was active). Perhaps Sony has the same option and it makes sense to have the limiter set at 0. Maybe +32 = 3200 ES. The 7200 ES will go to +72. Probably not. Another possibility: 0 is the optimal or reference volume setting and anything more is over driving it but now Sony (among others) is giving the user that option. Or perhaps .. |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | Glass TOSlink, thanks Maxx et al | and for only $35 for the two meter. Monster should be so economical.[addsig] |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | Glass TOSlink, thanks Maxx et al | I finally broke down and ordered the glass toslink from Stuart (missed the bit about the new potenially improved version) and I really like it. Definitely outdoes the Monster Lightspeed 300 it replaced. Better high end and not so much midrange "clutter" or overemphasis. Anything else I should know like proper care of my new glass toslink or does it get even better as it breaks in. Thanks to Maxx and everyone who suggested it. Good service from Stuart also, confirmation email with tracking info was sent and I got it today after ordering it on a Friday night (from North Carolina to .. |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | 5200 ES vs 4 ES: Sound quality | Didn't intend to open a can of worms or ruffled feathers... I think I'll look out for a deal on a 7100ES. The music is the big thing for me, that the movies sound great (ebven in two channel) is a great bonus. Of course I think the 4ES is still awesome and since I think/hope that component inputs can do the HD TV thing I think I'll be OK with my 4ES. Of course if I can find a 7100ES cheap enough I may have to jump. Thanks to all for sharing. More thoughts welcome.[addsig] |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | 5200 ES vs 4 ES: Sound quality | I'm thinking your referring George & Gladys and it is right outside Dade City. I pass by it every week on my way to church and/or a friend's house but couldn't think of the name. San Antonio is real nice. I'd like to live there except I'd rather be closer to stores and such. Would be closer to work in Wesley Chapel though. I'm gathering that so far the 5200ES would be a good replacement (but not as good sound wise) for the 4ES if it were cheaper. I know its all subjective but I figured I'd see what others thought. The 7100 sounds intriguing but there's the shipping factor. .. |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | 5200 ES vs 4 ES: Sound quality | Right now I only use the two fronts since I listen mostly to music. My room for listening is not optimal for surround sound. For the curious about the room comment: no carpet in the house, a door to the left and a closet along the back wall conspire with a strict renter's agreement to limit surround sound options. The other bedroom has no satellite plug and the living room is too big, too open, too uneven and too close to the neighbor in my duplex. But its only $585 a month for two bedroom, living room, partial kitchen and one bath. And my landlord promised not to rai .. |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | 5200 ES vs 4 ES: Sound quality | Quote: How the 4ES compares to the 5200ES, you will likely have a hard time getting this one answered I figured that might be the case but I think this is the most likely place to find Sony fans who have owned or test driven both. The 7100ES is very tempting but I'm not big on ordering such a large, expensive thing online. I'm also unsure about how I will like the digital amp sound. I'm sure its great but is it to my taste? I'm wondering if it'll "smooth out" the rock music I like to li .. |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | 5200 ES vs 4 ES: Sound quality | I am contemplating my next receiver after the 4ES, which I really like. The two reasons are I will need one more HDMI input than my TV supplies (need two, only got one) and you never know when a 6 year old receiver will decide it is time to "retire". Anyway I can understand the feature sets (except see below) but I would like to know how the 5200ES sounds like compared to the 4ES. Better, worse, different? I know that I have to decide ultimately but some advance intel may save time and trouble. I'm also thinking about the 7100ES if I can find one. Also any info on how the HDMI fe .. |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | Need to setup new Home Theater System what should | The STR-DG1000 is available at Best Buy (as well as other places but Best Buy may be the easiest to access) and meets all of your criteria (one HDMI output and two HDMI inputs, on screen display) except for the color (it is black). I don't know if a silver model is available elsewhere. It is $799.99 which is just under your $800 dollar limit. If you can wait for a sale it would be cheaper (and under the $800 limit after taxes). Many on this forum are impressed with this receiver and feel it is the caliber of the higher end ES series Sony receivers but not labeled as s .. |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | STR-DG1000 vs STR-DA3200ES | Sony may also feel the need to compete with the higher end offerings of Denon, Yamaha and Onkyo that are increasingly becoming available (and more affordable) at Circuit City and (to a lesser extent) Best Buy. The DE series just couldn't compete but this flagship DG series receiver appears to be doing quite nicely. Sony also keeps the ES prestige (and the smaller shops that carry them happy) by creating this new series. Denon is doing something similar at CC but they are taking the same receivers and giving them different model numbers. Example: the vaunted AVR-2807 became the AVR- .. |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | SONY'S New STR-DG1000 Receiver | Thanks for the replies. I suspected the HDMI 1.3 protocol as well. If they're trying to get it right before release good for them as the consumers won't be their "beta testers". My other thought was that they were trying to maximize their marketing position by finding the perfect release date. This is a common practice for mainstream music CDs. How the release date on a receiver would matter I don't know.[addsig] |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | SONY'S New STR-DG1000 Receiver | Anyone know what delays a product like this? Especially when its little brothers & sisters have been out for months (DG-800, DG-600 etc.). I could think of some possibilities but anyone have anthing more solid to satisfy my curiosity? Thanks.[addsig] |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | A wish list | The two channel amp is a popular choice, no argument from me. How about the next models of the SSK & SSX speaker series (even SSMs would be nice for those on a budget).[addsig] |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | Two Recievers, two rooms, too many choices for the | Quote: Sony recommmends that the K90s be placed close to intersecting walls and 4 inches from the rear wall. I've owned three pairs of Sony Floor speakers (including the K90s) and the instruction manuals all say the same thing about placement (and most everything else). Not that they are not right but it seems like it could be a case of info recycling. [addsig] |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | Surge Protector Dies so ES can live | Yep thats why you have them but the way it says "gave its life ..." always cracked me up. Makes me think the noble surge protector that watches guard over my stuff. I thank thee, noble Monster surge protector.[addsig] |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | Surge Protector Dies so ES can live | The Monster surge protector clean power box that I have said that if the light goes on (don't remember which) then the surge protector (and I quote) "gave its life to save your equipment". Always found that funny.[addsig] |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | SS-K90ED Damaged... need help | Since some of you seem to have opened the SSk90s up can you tell me what they look like inside. I have some but have no need / desire / ability to open them up (maybe the desire but without the ability to put them back together I'd rather not).[addsig] |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | Searching for SS-K90ED or SS-K70ED speakers | Quote: I just want to let you guys know I finally scored the second one and they are both on the way to me. I can't wait to hook them up. This week is going to be very, very long. I suspect you will be very happy indeed. [addsig] |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | directv to replace music choice with xm satelite m | I'm excited also. Now I get to hear XM w/o paying for it (since I have Directv anyway). Its not just the lack of ads but all the good new (and old that will be new to me) music I'll get to hear. The willingness of people to pay for something that has been free is a telltale sign of the lack of quality on most commercial radio stations. (I'm looking at you Clear Channel & Infinity). Same phenomanon happened with cable TV in the late 70s early 80s.[addsig] |
