BTW what is your mother tongue? I know someone I'd like to pass the knowledge on to._MMMike It's Afrikaans, sounds a bit like Dutch, only simple ..
Hi guys, I find this very funny. It just proves that any conversation can be turned into a chat about audio. Look at the first page, what the original topic was. Also read how politely the one guy is told that Bose is not that great. http://4xforum.co.za/cgi-bin/YaBB/YaBB.pl?board=VehicleChat;action=display;num=1146232056;start=30[addsig]
My dad had a set of "Bunny Ears" antenna for his TV. With it, he could get quite good reception, good enough to not warrant the purchace of an outside antenna. Now here is the intreresting bit; To improve the signal, he had made up a piece of wire, about 10 inches long, which he hang from the antenna. This was figured out with trial and error. For his one favourite channel, he had to hang it on one "ear", and for the other he would hang it on the other. So here's what he did every time: Change the channel on the remote control, get up and move the piece of wire to the other ..
I have such a story Max When we moved to a another house, we had to store some furniture at my parents place for a month or so. I set up my cheapie Sansui AMP, CD player and speakers for my dad, who loved his classical music... and I mean cheap here, the name is Sansui but it is made in India In any case, the speaker wires were too short for proper placement, so I layed one speaker on its side on the carpet, another was placed at the back of a chair (remember this was temporary). When I powered it, I could not believe my ears. I almost went through his whole CD collection tha ..
Craig Where did you audition the SSK's? I am in the market as well, and I am looking for a good deal. If I can only get the bl00dy dealers to call me back!! I want 4... Seems one can never buy just 2 of these ) [addsig]
I agree with Max there. I have the STR-DB790, which is the European equivalent, and it is really good. It still gives me goosebumps, after almost two years. Don't worry too much about extra soundfields, and modes and features and so on. The sound of the 1000ES is so captivating that you end up playing with these things once or twice, and then you go back to the pure uncomplicated sound as recorded. Thats my $0.02![addsig]
Dom, you are probably right. I once had some grounding problems, and my TV just wouldn't sync. As I pressed on my DVD to inspect the connections, it really bit me. The multimeter confirmed 90V. I sorted it out by getting proper plug converters. I felt rather lucky that I didn't smoke anything. We have a problem over here... We have proper three terminal 15A plug standard, that includes an earth wire, but all our electronics come with British standard plugs, so you have to get a converter. These are problem prone. You cannot just cut the wire and put on a proper plug, because t ..
With my previous crappy Akai DVD player, I got it a lot, especially on DTS tracks. Now with my new Sony player it's gone. I suggest you borrow a DVD player and see if it happens again. [ This message was edited by: hp_meyer on 2005-04-19 07:43 ]
Hi All I have taken the plunge and thus I am now the proud owner of two new pieces of equipment: Jamo PJ SW 7000-A Subwoofer. Sony 575 DVD player. Both of these have already brought me lots of joy. The DVD player is just so much better than what I had before. Lots of features and no drop-out on DTS tracks. The Sub... WOW! What a difference! As a side note: My wife said that she can't hear the difference. So I switched it off. She felt silly after that.[addsig]
Hi! Sorry all, this is way of thread... Nice to see New Zealanders here! Are you also looking foreward to the Super 12? I am from Pretoria, South Africa.[addsig]
You should not confuse the DC resistance with Impedance. Impedance, in laymans terms, is the product of reactance and inductance. In other words... Your speaker has both capacative and inductive charataristics. This is only evident at AC. When you do your DC measurement, you measure the resistance of the wire only, which should be pretty close to 0 Ohm, as you get.[addsig]
I must admit, I will also be a bit afraid to buy anything above the 1000ES. To me it's almost a case of "Ask yourself, do you feel lucky, Punk?" I believe the next generation of ES amps will be ... unbeliveable! But for me, in my very humble opinion, the technology is not stable yet.[addsig]
Swanich The Sony stuff is actually not that expensive over here. I paid R4000 (About $600) for my STR-DB790, from an official Sony distributer. What's nice is that it has all the European trimmings, like RDS etc. Make sure your transformer has an adequate Volt Ampere or Watts rating. In other words, if the Amplifier draws say 100W according to the spec, make your transformer a 120W unit, or there abouts. If you go for a quality Toroid transformer, it may be quite expensive. Voorspoed![addsig]
Just to let you guys know. The shipment turned out to be $850. A bit rich for my liking. One can buy B&W for a similar price over here. One day... I thought this could be my cheap ticket to good quality. Too bad. If you guys would like some insight into the type of sound we do over here, visit these guys: http://www.hfxsystems.com/ They are at the upper scale of resellers around here. (Not related to them, I only drool there a lot )[addsig]
I was actually considering buying these babies. Audioadvisor allows international sales and shipment. I guess the shipping will make it not cost effective any more. 50 Odd lb. must be very expensive to ship. Pity though... Anybody working in a shipping business with some spare space going to South Africa? [addsig]
It sounds absolutely stunning. I must admit, I am a bit envious. I like the starry sky bit. This one is going to be NICE! WRT room treatment. I just love that wonderful silence that you get when you walk into a well designed and constructed room. Wish mine was like that. I hate open plan set-ups ... I am saving up for a dedicated properly treated room, outside my house (lots of space, 13000 sq ft plot)... And I got some ideas from this thread! -hp_meyer
Hi Ethereal_Psycho You do not mention what you will be using for the visual part of your home theater. With a dedicated large room, you might want to consider a projector... Only my 0.02 worth... Please post a picture once you are done, I for one will love to see the result! -hp_meyer
