Broadband up, 4GB PNY USB thumb drive installed, account set up @ BD-LIVE Center, can play previews of movies, utilize all of the Bonus View features fine (Chronicles Of Riddick as example, even with my aging DA4ES the sound never ceases to amaze me--highly recommended). The "Storage Space" indicator at the bottom right side of the BD-LIVE main page shows zip, nada, null. Yet, when I try to use the Exclusive Content item featuring the commentary of Twohy/Diesel, it says I don't have enough memory available. There are so many variables, like speaker size settings, subwoofer placement, ad infinitum... I can only relate what works best for me. I only watch SciFi/Horror on a BDP-S350 or via Verizon FiOS. I use the Cinema Studio EX B (DCSB, the "Kim Novak Theater") soundfield for everything. (Make sure your Menu Expand option is enabled in the Customize menu to get access to every user setting available). I have the Effect Level in the Surround Menu pumped up to the max, 150%, factory default is 100%. If I have the choice, I wil .. | | Television Troublesh... | KDL-32XBR9 firmware update | Hello Sony Sages, There is a firmware update available for the 32XBR9. I am not experiencing any of the issues it is supposed to fix. Has anyone performed the update and seen any worthwhile benefits from it? I have enough experience to do the update, but subscribe to the age old wisdom of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Thought it best to consult the oracle before proceeding-- thx in advance. Aiden aka RJMacReady | | Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | STRDA4ES OPT/COAX LED Question | Maverick, Wow, thanks for the very detailed reply. You have certainly given me a lot to think about. On a non-BluRay DVD like Blade III, and others that give you the option (damn few) I always did prefer the DTS-ES soundtracks over the DolbyDigital EX versions. I can think of a few soundtracks I have committed to memory (Alien, Carpenter's The Thing, and The Chronicles Of Riddick) and would love to hear the uncompressed versions in all their sonic glory. We certainly have come a long way from the JVC VHS machines with the pop up tape carriage and mono sound, have we not? Thanks again for your .. | | Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | STRDA4ES OPT/COAX LED Question | Hello Reinhart and Maverick, Thx for the courtesy of the replies. A question for you Maverick, if you don't mind: How would you rate your enthusiasm/appreciation for the newer audio formats like DTS HD MA or Dolby True vs. their older incarnations? I'm guessing you have a few favorite movies where you are familiar enough with the previous version soundtracks down to the very minute aspects of it, and then sprung for the BluRay versions. How impressive were the differences? I would not mind upgrading to the newer formats if there was a huge difference. My 4ES is over six years old, and does hav .. | | Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | STRDA4ES OPT/COAX LED Question | Hey AaronB, I should have mentioned I tried the Audio Input button on the front panel. It will not budge off of Coax Fixed, (with the coax cable not connected) but that is only on the DVD/LD function. If I go to SAT function, I can select Auto 2 CH, Coax Fixed, Optical Fixed... The BDPS350 replaced the DVP-NC685V, the Audio Split was never used with either deck. I used the Coax Audio Output on both decks. I never tried to use the Optical Out on the NC685V deck. Beginning to look like the DA4ES is sending up smoke signals it may be time for a newer model, yes? As I mentioned, the faul .. | | Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | STRDA4ES OPT/COAX LED Question | Hello All, My DA4ES is great, it has the usual erratic manual function control knob operation. Who cares as long as the remote never fails, right? I was switching some gear around, and previously had the BDPS350 feeding the audio via the Coax Digital Input. When I disconnected the Coax cable and used an Optical cable to feed the audio, the Coax indicator never went out, the OPT indicator never came on, and I got no sound. There was no "Stream Unlock... message displayed either . I checked the Optical cable and it is good. Once I bought the 27XBR squared, I became addicted and have seldom considered another product line, (except for speakers.) Particularly the XBR/ES lines have added to the quality of my life. I am going to purchase a 32XBR9 in the next few weeks. If I have the debut dates correct, (approx. May 2008 for the XBR6, March 2009 for the XBR9?) the best XBR9 price I can get from an Authorized Sony Dealer, about 4 months post first availability, is roug .. | | Other (Tape, Short W... | Part ID for SLV-780HF | Darrel, Sorry for the delay---no, I haven't. I just got off the phone with the greatest Sony parts pro ever at their KC facility. She has the tape transport in stock for $30.84 plus S&H. If it wasn't a Sony, I would not consider spending more than a couple of dollars on it. If I recall correctly, the SLV-HF decks were a tad pricey, but worth it. It was love at first sight, and has worked flawlessly for 13 years. It has always been connected to a good quality surge protector (TrippLite Isobar). My five main/surrounds are all the same, JBLS26II, not exactly top of the line stuff. 4" woofers, if I recall correctly. I also use two powered subwoofers. The area where I live is typically suburban, with some tall trees, telephone poles etc. I am using a $15.00 USD Radio Shack antenna now, but the performance leaves a lot to be desired. Only one of the "Big Four" HDTV broadcasters' signal comes in strong and does not drop out, causing screen freezes, audio mischief, etc... I am using the very moderately priced JBL S26II speakers as my 5.1 surround speakers,w/the matching JBL Center SII, and two powered subwoofers. In most soundfields/functions it seems like the "Small" setting is slightly better.( Contradicting the advice in the owner's manual). The Night Mode is actually quite pleasing while using the "Small" setting. With the setting as "Large", it seems all Night Mode does is reduce the overall volume. My new home will be just that, brand new (either a modular or manufactured home.) I wish to have every room completely fitted out with Sony HD monitors, feeds from XM satellite radio as well as audio from a central source, whether it be from a CD changer, etc... I want the equipment to blend seamlessly with the housing, which means either running a bunch of wires behind walls, or going with some sort of "Whole House A/V Distribution System". I did read the Feb/March issue of "Sound & Vision" and found some of the whole house con .. | | Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | Sony 3000ES | Avbee, Welcome to Agoraquest. You will find this an immensely informative site. I have read that the 3000ES line has some problems, right out of the box. (Hum and hiss mostly, but I could be wrong). Please rest assured, if indeed you do have a faulty unit, it is VERY unusual for Sony ES. I have owned many ES products over the years, and NEVER had to have a repair done. One diagnostic tip-- hook up a pair of headphones to the headphones jack (1/4"F on the front panel on my DA4ES). Do you still hear the noises? If you do, that would eliminate the speakers as being the problem. Another tip- .. | | Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | First post and question | Martice, Welcome to Agoraquest. This is a real treasure trove of accurate information and advice. If you have never owned Sony ES before, you are in for a real treat. I have owned many ES products, and have NEVER had to have any repairs done. I can not report the same track record with any other brands. Good luck...
