| Blu-Ray/HD DVD | Poor quality blu-ray movie | Hey, Mav! I have not been on the forum in a while either. While I don't have any specific info on your BD playback situation with the 1080/50 on "Warrior" there is a real reason that some modern films are a bit grainy in BD. Please notice below the excerpt from a review of this movie on Bluray.com Warrior is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Lionsgate Films with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 2.40:1. This is a very nice looking high definition presentation despite a sort of proto-indie feel that keeps things filtered toward the green side .. |
| Blu-Ray/HD DVD | Has anyone used Disney's World of Wonder AV Calibr | I was wondering if anyone used Disney's World of Wonder Blu-ray AV Calibration Suite? How does it compare with other calibration suites? Just curious and wondering if it's worth paying for since I only have an older DVD calibration disc.[addsig] |
| Home Theater Gallery | DenMar's home theater setup | Wow! You nailed the 676 vs. JVC quandary I have gone through right on the head, Reinhart. Using the info you detailed on the 676 problem, I may try my hand at remedying the issue, eventually, IF it becomes that important. The TRV120 was sent in to be repaired at a place that does such repairs but they wouldn't touch it since they couldn't get parts. Harrumph! That thing is way to tiny for me to get into. I really enjoyed the 676 a lot. It has seen a lot of use and I hate that it's not in the lineup. But you're right .. |
| Home Theater Gallery | DenMar's home theater setup | I used the TRV120 a lot. I have no less than 30 1-hour Digital 8 tapes. Once I get all those transferred into the PC, I'll start working on the 40 2-hour analog 8mm tapes. I think the problem is the different brands of tapes I've used over the years. They use different lubricants in their tapes and I've heard that mixing tape brands clogs the heads. Of course I learned this after years of using the camcorder. I wonder if the sensor that determines whether it's analog 8mm analog or Digital 8. The 676 is idle. I don't .. |
| Home Theater Gallery | DenMar's home theater setup | Thanks for the feedback, Reinhart. I also suspect that the SLV-676UC VCR has a tape tension issue. I should try to get some chamois swabs. I have denatured alcohol to use. Here's the link for the thread I started regarding my camcorder playback issue. It has more detail I need not repeat here. I doubt I can get the camcorder apart far enough to reach the whole path. DVR-TRV120 playback issues There has been a recent addition to the Home Theater setup, a DV .. |
| Home Theater Gallery | DenMar's home theater setup | I do still have the deck, Reinhart. Finances are very tight right now, but I will keep your offer under advisement. I don't yet know if I will need a VCR again, at this point. I do desperately need to find someone who can clean my old DCR-TRV120 Digital 8 camcorder or at least point me in the direction of resources to learn how to clean it. |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | HDBaseT to replace HDMI cables | Thanks, Maxx! I really appreciate the exploded view of the Denon cable and the explanation yo offered on the difference upgraded connections make on the inside of components. I just don't know what "SOTA gear" is. Is that referring to the brand of turntable makers? [addsig] |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | HDBaseT to replace HDMI cables | I suspect then, that the only solution to this concern is to mod the hardware. Yikes! That sounds like that could get very expensive. I am enjoying the audio of my blu-ray player via the multi-channel inputs. I have less control, but it seems "cleaner" somehow. (I'm not sure how else to describe it) Has anyone taken apart an HDMI cable to see what lies within it? I'm curious. I've seen the innards of an RJ-45 Ethernet cable and know that those wires are TINY . Considering the size of the .. |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | HDBaseT to replace HDMI cables | According to an article on PCWorld.com, HDMI is likely going to have some competition and may be on its way out. An I would say, "Glad to hear it!" I'm just not too sure how much better HTBaseT will be considering the size of the wires being used. How can such small wires be better than the larger ones? Then add power inside the wire bundle. With some of the high end folks taking great pains to separate power from audio, how would this be high quality? I have had the same concerns with HDMI (without the power bundled i .. |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | DA-4ES, BDP-S1 and lossless audio | After working with and doing what minor tweaking I can do with the multi-channel inputs, I can tell a difference from the Dolby Digital. I am on the line about liking it better. I have to say that I am getting used to it and slightly prefer the multi-channel over my usual Sony DCS B. I like that the DCS B spreads the center channel out and makes the voice less pinpointed so it is not so obvious where the center channel is. However, i like that the multi-channel is just what was intended from the director. I suppose that while I am listening to the .. |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | DA-4ES, BDP-S1 and lossless audio | Doh! I don't know what's worse, being anal or being wrong. I couldn't take now knowing what was wrong, so I had to dig some more. I switched out the cable and found that it was a faulty cable. Isn't it amazing how much the whole range of the audio signal can enhance the movie experience? I feel pretty dumb having missed that. It turns out that there was enough LFE being sent to the left channel and enough of the higher frequencies coming from center and right channels as well as the L/R surrounds to confuse my hearing. &n .. |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | DA-4ES, BDP-S1 and lossless audio | On 2010-07-13 19:57, mhedges wrote: That doesn't seem right. Are you sure you don't have some cables mixed up? Well, it seems that that you are right, mhedges. There is something amiss, but I haven't been able to track it down. All seems fine except the menus and maybe other types of signals, but I don't know specifically. No doubt that the feature presentations are just fine. So I am guessing some setting is off somewhere. I did do a setup disc using the Toy Story 2 BD's optimizer and did find that the left .. |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | DA-4ES, BDP-S1 and lossless audio | jehill, I understand what you are saying about the mix, but that's not really what I'm after since I would like to have the center channel to function, just not quite so isolated. I kinda figured that there was little I could do to alter the audio without adding an outboard audio mixer (not an option). jttar, I have tried the multi-channel button on the receiver's front as you suggest, but it proved no different than what I've done by assigning the TV/Sat function to use the multi-channel imputs for its source. I think I have the answer to my question when you stated: .. |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | DA-4ES, BDP-S1 and lossless audio | At the suggestion of another Amp/Receiver forum string I took some cables I wasn't using and patched in my S1 blu-ray player into the 4ES receiver's multi-channel 2 inputs and told the receiver to use TV/SAT. I am getting the audio through the receiver. The audio is pleasing and very clear. I was just wondering what, if any adjustments I may make to the audio. I am not able to do much more than bump up the multi-channel 2 sub woofer by 10 dB. I was hoping to intermix the front mains with the center channel just a bit. .. |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | STR-DA4ES Can't use Optical with DVD | All this talk of the benefit of lossless audio as well as its easy achievability on the DA-4ES has got me to thinking that I should try it. I have enough cables and only need to move the BD player to accomplish it. I am interested in trying and verifying what you've been saying about the pleasingly noticeable difference of lossless audio over digital audio. I've never really considered using the multi-channel feature of my 4ES, but I did get the S1 with its 5.1 analog out for this eventuality. It's been a while since I did any real tweaking on the .. |
| Television Configura... | kdl-46xbr9 extracing digital audio from a hdmi inp | Hey, Sunlitcomet . I have an XBR9 HDTV and an analog receiver (Sony STD-DA4ES) which is not HDMI compatible. So it is essential that I use the toslink out for my audio through the receiver. I run audio from my blu-ray player or HD camcorder to the HDMI in on the TV then out to the receiver. This works very well. I hope this helps a you. Please let us know how things turn out. [addsig] |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | DA4ES Front left channel clipping off at low volum | Wow, jehill. Seems that are pretty familiar with this stuff. You always amaze me with your know how. I sure hope I never need your help in this way, but very thankful to know that you're there for us. Curious though, rather than use resistors as fuse, why not use a fuse? It would be easier to replace, right. DenMar |
| Blu-Ray/HD DVD | BDP S-1 stopped working: "Loading" message shown | Hey, 2mchpwr. Sorry to hear of you BDP-S1. We should start with knowing what firmware version you have on the S1. Hopefully know already know since your controls don't seem to be working. |
| Home Theater Gallery | DenMar's home theater setup | Reinhart, I will have to look at the VCR in the hopes that it is the easier fix. No loss in trying. As regards the tape deck, I expect you are correct. I did open the deck up and saw that it seemed that there was a lot of dust buildup on the interior mechanical parts. I thought that strange. It is too complex for me to take apart or even begin to break down. [addsig] |
| Home Theater Gallery | DenMar's home theater setup | duketbrd88, you make a wonderful offer. Looks like a great sub. I'm not yet ready to spend that kind of money right now, but I will keep it in mind (if the offer still stands by then). The suggestion you make is great, but as much as we would like to, we cannot hang the TV on the wall (house is not ours so we're taking a minimally invasive approach). |
