Sorry guys, I saw the need for a change. The Beast is still alive at my brother in law and performing well, the player and the amp is for sale in DK. The reason was, that I came to a point where I missed some options in the setup: No BluRay player, no HDMI connectors in amp, the possibility of using Netflix and the wish for amping all 5 channels instead of only the 2 frontspeakers via the Beast. Finally I wanted to connect a NAS to the system, supporting wireless accesspoint for all devices in the house. All this was done - after som weeks of research - with a player, preamp and amp in the ..
The bass is certainly better sounding and is more precise - but the power amp still enters Protection mode sometimes when the Monster plays in 11 o´clock position. We are now looking for a replacement of the 6 smaller caps.
The Golden Beast is back to life! After consulting my brother in law, who made some calculations, referring to the technical manual, I bought these: Ordered as RIFA caps in the catalog, but the ones we received was with this brand. Same specs. As the mounting screws are different from the original ones, we had to mount them otherwise. At this picture, the yellow plastic sleeves (right word?) shows where they are connected to the print: Wires mounted at caps, ready for placement: And finally, caps in place. They have to lie down, fastened to the chassis to the left ..

However, I have seen one for sale in DK these days for the double of that, which is far from realistic for the seller to get. So I just wait to see if the price is getting lower. [addsig]
Was just curious if they still can be found: http://www.ebay.com/itm/SONY-TA-N90ES-POWER-AMPLIFLIERS-PAIR-CONSEC-S-N-PREMIUM-w-XLR-R-MONO-BRIDGE-/251126449560?pt=US_Home_Audio_Amplifiers_Preamps&hash=item3a784d8598#ht_14710wt_1397 Not realistic for me to buy - not in gold, too expensive and not European power supply . But if I find one in gold within EU for no more than $500 I would consider it as a replacement for my present Beast instead of repairing it ... But otherwise, I think it is going to have caps replaced with 2 x 3 10000 uF instead of a pair of 33000 uF. Looking i ..
Thanks mykyll ... it was frustrating not to know what happened - no info available in search-machines. I think someone participating in this thread is sending me private messages. Quite alright, but as a non-premium member I just want to mention, that I cannot read them. Can I display my private mail-account here? [ This message was edited by: Mrman on 2012-07-24 09:40 ]
BTW: AQ have been unreachable from Europe for some days - if you wonder why I didn´t answered your post until now. [ This message was edited by: Mrman on 2012-07-24 09:16 ] [ This message was edited by: Mrman on 2012-07-24 09:17 ]
frahengeo - it began with "Protection" mode at a not too high volume (but it sure wasn´t low ...;-) ). The 2nd. time it happened, I began to wonder what caused this error. After some intense listening, I noticed that the bass has become "loose" and "sloppy" - in all it did not sound as well as I was used to. Also the mid-range seemed affected, but only in certain passages of music or voices. My brother in law, who is a technician within this, concluded that the caps were the source to the symptoms. So age must be the initial guess for a reason - the fact, that they are 20 years old is anoth ..
A bit further up the road ... now The Golden Beast is in parts and ready for replacement of caps ... when I find some! There is a small hill to climb: Which ones to replace the old ones? I will explain along with the photos. The Golden Beast is open. From the back ... the caps are mounted with the 4 copper screws at the board to the left. A closer look. The board without the caps from the other side of the board. The placement or the way the caps are mounted at the board turned out to become a challenge, when I looked for replacements at the net: The distan ..
Thankyou so much, Maxxwire. I really appreciate if you are able to find it. If it only was the photo, I could live with not finding it, but there was a description of what was done to upgrade the connectors. And it would be very helpful to have it ...
Sorry, not this one Maxxwire. And I wrote power supply, it is the l/r connectors, I mean. The photo I am looking for was taken from inside and quite close to the connectors. The topic of the post - as far as I remember - was about poor assembling quality and poor material from the production. The connectors were upgraded with better material and the result was told to be significant for the performance of The Beast. I will keep you posted in my own thread about the progress. We are not there yet, the parts to replace has to be identified and bought.
Maxxwire - I am looking for a photo from one of your posts, but I have lost track of it. It was taken from the inside of The Beast, and illustrated an exchange of the connectors to the power supply. I am on my way to lift the cover - reason is described in my thread: http://www.agoraquest.com/viewtopic.php?topic=31989&forum=51 It is possible I will look into this also, now that The Beast has to be opened. So I would be pleased, if you are able to find it for me.
Thanks Mark - the bias will be checked as you suggest. The Golden Beast lives as shown in the picture from my post 2009-03-29 08:33 (page 1) The distance to the wall is ca. 10 cm. I have never measured the temperature, but I don´t have to remove my hands when on top of the amp. I know this is not an objective way to set the temperature level ... Are there any guidelines to check if it is too hot? Of course - if you burn your hands, it is time to do something
I don´t have the meters to check bias, but my brother in law who are going to fix this have and mentioned this check, he will do. I have the service manual. [ This message was edited by: Mrman on 2012-04-22 08:01 ]
I guess I have to replace the capacitors at The Golden Beast. It has gone into protection mode twice, while playing music with heavy bass, and the impression of the bass has become a bit "loose" lately. What to look for, when choosing which pair to buy? For your pleasure I intend to take pictures during the replacement.
... I use the preout for frontspeakers and have them connected via a pair of Eagle cables, my brother in law bought about 20 years ago. They are giving me the best sound so far, even though the midrange area still could be improved. There is a picture here: http://www.agoraquest.com/viewtopic.php?topic=31989&forum=51&start=15&select_page_number=2 - 5 posts down. I don´t use the balanced option at the Golden Beast ... in all this means, that the amp is only connected with the speakers back and the center.
Exactly that, thank you SO much mykl ! The remote was 1 and the player 3. Was not aware of this function, as I bought the player used, and as eveything worked, I have never bothered about this part of the set-up ... to this experience I can add that when returning from holiday, the set-up for sound, tv, multichannel, amp etc. was all in a mess, because our son in order to solve "a problem" had tried everything to make it work. He told me that after I have spent 1 hour to get everything in place ... Looks like this was the final of the "re-installation" [addsig]
No, I wasn´t thinking of that to be the reason. That would also mean, that I should have changed it, but I haven´t. But your question made me remember, that our son looked after our house, while on holiday, and the time since it stopped working could fit ... so I will check this, when returning from work this evening. Thx! [ This message was edited by: Mrman on 2011-10-28 05:13 ]
I photographed the front of the remote in "DVD" mode, while pushing any button and saw the infrared signal beeing sent, so the error is located inside the player. What I need now is the look or the specifications for the IR unit, as it - according to a friend - is a piece of cake to replace. So: Do any of you guys know the specs for this? Or where to find it? A simple Google search didn´t gave any useable hints.
