| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | Headphones | A properly powered Headphone Amp is very important to the sound of the headphones. I recently replaced the Vacuum Tubes in my Headphone Amp with another pair of vintage Amperex 6DJ8 Orange Globe Dual Triode Tubes and it did wonders for the sound of my headphones! |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | Using external HDD for audio playback. | What these Asynchronous USB-S/PDIF Converters/ Reclockers with their 24/192 XMOS Receiver chips are designed for is very high quality S/PDIF Audio output at vanishingly low rates of jitter. This is the kind of highly accurate Reclocker that Audiophiles use in front of their Stereo DACs rather than using USB input to increase their sonic accuracy. This is also the kind of high resolution equipment that would bring out the best sound quality of a Receiver's Stereo playback, but unfortunately there is no accommodation for compressed multichannel playback, but I'm sure that there is an o .. |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | STR-DB930 advice on caps that should be replaced | Other than the dedicated AC power line, have you altered the DB930 in any way? Do you have a pic of how your upgraded AC is terminated on the circuit board and also how the physical cable is terminated to the carcase? Geoff- My 1999 Model Sony DB 930 is completely original with the exception of the aftermarket Furutech FP Alpha 3 OCC Copper Power Cord that was installed for its 12th anniversary. The combination of the excellent quality supply of AC Power and this high quality power cord using its resources caused an Order of Magnitude improvement in the sound quality and performance of the D .. |

| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | STR-DB930 advice on caps that should be replaced | Geoff- The more frequent recapping of the equipment in your studio makes sense because at the most basic level replacement frequency depends on the capacitor's longevity under load as well as how many hours the equipment is used. I very highly recommend a dedicated supply of AC Powe for your Audio equipment to use originating at the main electrical panel in your home. What many people do not understand is that the most devastating source of AC Power contamination does not come from outside the Audio System, but rather from within it. Plugging Audio equipment in along side .. |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | Using external HDD for audio playback. | I can remember back when I was using the Realtek internal adaptive sound in my HP Desktop computer and Glass Toslink out to my Sony DB930 Receiver, but after doing some research decided to try using an English designed Musical Fidelity V-Link Asynchronous external sound card to covert USB from the computer into S/PDIF for the DB930 to use and the improvements in sound quality were not subtle... As great as the V-Link sounded for its modest price it was still using 5v power from the USB bus which comes from the computer's SMPS which is far less than pristine quality. The clean power sol .. |
| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | STR-DB930 advice on caps that should be replaced | geoffmallan- Welcome to Agoraquest and congratulations on acquiring a pristine condition 1999 Sony DB 930! It was this same subject of the DB930 Receiver that brought me to Agoraquest to make my First Post back in 2002 . The generally accepted rule for cap replacement with classic Audio Gear is after 20 years, but having owned my DB930 for almost 14 years my answer to your question about cap replacement would be that it depends primarily on how many years your European version DB930QS has been used. In other words if it has only has a few years of actual use then there is currently no p .. |

My response to your situation is based on my own personal experience and not on respective brand names or build quality because there is a factor in Audio playback which transcends both of these factors. I discovered this while working with my 1999 Sony DB 930 Integrated Receiver along side my $25,000 Conrad-Johnson powered Vacuum Tube Separates Audio System which took 8 years to build and is comprised of 9 components... | Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | Using external HDD for audio playback. | This picture was taken in the studio from a slightly different angle. From the Barry Diament Audio website... "Monitoring is provided by Magnepan's Magneplanar MG 3.7 loudspeakers. For the technically inclined, these are a planar design with a dipolar radiation pattern. They feature quasi-ribbon bass and midrange drivers and a true ribbon tweeter. These speakers are very revealing of all aspects of recorded quality and they have an uncanny ability to sound like Music." |

| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | Using external HDD for audio playback. | There are many technical reasons for the sonic advantages that computer playback has over CD playback and Barry Diament who has been a professional audio engineer since 1975 and in 1983 he became one of the first engineers to master for CD. He formed Barry Diament Audio in 1987 after he left Atlantic Records to become an independent audio engineer. Here are some things that he has had to say about the fundamental differences between Digital Music playback from a computer and from CD playback and the impact that these differences have on sound quality... | Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | Which is Better: STR-DA50ES vs STR-DB930 | I have never heard nor inspected the build quality of the Sony DA50ES so I could only speculate as to how its performance compares with the Sony DB 930. I can tell you though that when Sony began marketing their new line of DB Receivers in 1999 that they used the slogan "ES quality at a DE price" and they proceeded to put an extraordinary high quality "loss leader" build in the Flagship of the DB Line which was the 930 Model. For example Sony chose to outfit the DB 930 with a pair of genuine 15,000 mf Nichicon KG Gold Tune Power Supply Caps where most Sony DA Class Receive .. |

| Amp/Receiver/Speaker... | Which is Better: STR-DA50ES vs STR-DB930 | What it took to raise the sound quality of my 1999 Sony DB 930 Receiver from excellent to unprecedented levels of fidelity was a set of upgrades to its AC Power Delivery System which consist primarily of the 1997 VansEvers Line Conditioner shown on the right and the Furutech FP Alpha 3 OCC Single Crystal Copper Conductor Power Cord terminated with a Furutech FI-28 Rhodium Plated Pure Copper AC Plug. Having experimented with several AC Plugs at many ascending price-points beginning from the $6 Leviton 8215C Hospital Grade Plug which I describe from the first page of th .. |
