Amp/Receiver/Speaker...dual center channels my observationsI applaud your efforts to improve your system by experimenting with speaker placement. This is the single most important (and cheapest) tweak that can be made to any system. I recently finished constructing my dedicated home theatre / listening room. I use an identical trio of floor standing tower speakers up front, behind an acoustically transparent projection screen. The result of three identical speakers is excellent imaging, and having the sound come from directly behind the screen (rather than around it) very much enhances the auditory experience. Placement of front effects is sp ..

No, definitely caused by the broken seal. The VFD display is normally filled with an inert gas. After the seal is broken, oxygen gets in and ruins the display almost instantly when it gets powered on. The burn marks are caused by the reaction with oxygen, not an electrical fault. I like your description of the differences between the mo ..
Amp/Receiver/Speaker...Trying to input HDMI Video with Analog Audio into The problem is that you are selecting the HDMI input directly. When you do that, the receiver expects to get audio and video over that HDMI link. To get around this, you need to use the video assign functionality. Basically, you take a normal input ("SAT" for example) and assign an HDMI input (e.g. HDMI 3)as the video source for it. Now when you select SAT, the HDMI 3 input will be the active video input, BUT the TV input's audio (digital if available, analog otherwise) will remain the audio source. Check the manual under "Enjoying Sound/Images from other inputs" (page 94 on th ..
Amp/Receiver/Speaker...Sony 5300es source switching noiseFind the "decode priority" in the menu, it is in the audio settings menu. Make sure it is set to "auto", not "pcm".
Amp/Receiver/Speaker...STR-GX10ESI'm happy to see someone intent on restoring these high end pieces to their former glory. I resurrected a DB930 from the dead around 8 years ago and I still use it on a regular basis. From the photo of the display, it looks to me like the little glass nub formed when the display was vacuumed then sealed at the factory is actually broken off, and that there is now a visible hole into it. If so, that's what caused the failure. [ This message was edited by: AaronB on 2011-06-01 09:57 ]
Amp/Receiver/Speaker...Looking for Sony plasma receiver model # SONY MBD5How did you ever get the display without the media box? Anyway the only advice I can give is to try calling Sony parts 1-800-488-SONY (7669)
Amp/Receiver/Speaker...Sony STR_DB895-30 dB is a perfectly resonable volume setting for "loud" output. Note that each 10 dB will (by definition) result a tenfold increase in power. So 0 dB 1000 x the power output of -30 dB. Your amp will clip and your speakers will become very unhappy sometime before you reach 0 dB though. I need to run my 5400ES at -20 dB to get reasonable, "living room" levels out of it.
Amp/Receiver/Speaker...5600es Pre outs not workingI agree with jeromelang, your comment is way off Maxxwire. I understand the confusion, the recording outputs (the output terminals for inputs like "Tape") are not active when using a source connected only via digtial. The 2nd or 3rd zone outputs will also not work with a digital-only source. But the pre-amp outputs are not the same as the recording outputs. The pre-amp outputs are the same analog signals that drive the receiver's power amps (or sometimes they are an attenuated version of the amplifier output instead... the result is the same). The pre-amp outputs should always be active. The O ..
Amp/Receiver/Speaker...strda7100es vs strda5600esAll older Sony ES receivers (prior to the DA5000ES et all with digital power amps) used power amps based on an integrated circuit driver connected to a pair of power transistors. The same driver IC was used on all receivers from very low end to the highest end ES ones. Then there was the S-Master digital amps. Now, the higher end ES receviers all again use analog amps, but now they based on an entirely "discrete" design, which uses individual components instead of that driver IC. The result is a simpler amp (in the pure engineering sense) that usually measures worse in distortion tests, but wh ..
Amp/Receiver/Speaker...STR-DA5400ES input signal information display? On my older STR-DA4ES, now used in the living room, I can view information about the input stream using the menu scrolling buttons while not in the menu - the sampling rate, stream type (dts, DD, PCM, etc.), bit depth, etc. are displayed. I want the same information from my STR-DA5400ES in the theatre. Has anyone found a way to do this on any receiver from 5300ES through 5600ES?
Amp/Receiver/Speaker...The AC Plug Thread / The Benefits of Upgrading to On 2010-08-03 19:44, Maxxwire wrote: As a reference the iLink jitter spec measured on Sony's XA9000ES reference level player was 40 ps which is 800% higher than on the IS Bus Digital interface. ~Maxx~ I call BS on that. Firewire/iLink uses isonchronous transmission for audio streams. The receving component's clocks are used for audio reproduction, not the transmitting component's clock. That by definition means that the receving end component, and only the receiving end component, defines the jitter. The source component does not and can not contribute any jitter whatsoever.
Amp/Receiver/Speaker...Analogue Automatic Volume controlsThat is effectively a dynamic range compressor. If you use it, you will find that the quiet passages in your music are cranked up to be as loud as the loud passages. This is probably not what you want, unless you are listening at a very low volume, or in a noisy environment, and want the quiet parts to be heard over background noise. I use DRC in my car for that reason, and it works well, but I would never use it at home.
Amp/Receiver/Speaker...STR-DA4ES Can't use Optical with DVD On 2010-06-29 23:01, Maxxwire wrote: On 2010-06-29 21:32, ES_RevengeII wrote: ...The decrease in build quality of a newer receiver equivalent to a 4ES (say a DA4400ES) is not such that you will have the DA4ES sounding better with Dolby Digital than the DA4400ES with TrueHD--I just don't see that being possible. Nevertheless the DA4ES with its 2X more powerful power supply combined with a BD Player and 3 good pairs of Analog interconnects will blow any modern consumer grade HDMI Receiver right off the shelf with the authority of its superior sound and excellent classic Sony bui ..
Amp/Receiver/Speaker...Sony DA9100ESWhich pic is which receiver? I can plainly see that the (numerous) electrolytic capacitors are Nichicon Muse Fine Gold in the second picture, but are some other black-clad type in the top picture. Hopefully they are not cheapo generics. I'd really like to know what brand they are though...
Amp/Receiver/Speaker..."New" Sony STR-DA3600, 4600, 5600ES Receiver ThreaI stand corrected on the 4400 HDMI inputs.
Amp/Receiver/Speaker..."New" Sony STR-DA3600, 4600, 5600ES Receiver ThreaThe 4400ES has 4 HDMI inputs also. Only the 5x00 series had 6 HDMI inputs. I am very disappointed that the maximum video resolution for DLNA (network) video playback is still merely 720x480 (DVD size) rather than HD. And yes they are definitely 3D capable. This is explicitly stated in the manual (I only checked the 4600 manual).
Amp/Receiver/Speaker...Sony STR-VA333ES multichannel inputs (Jehill's preJudging by that graph, it looks like 80 Hz, and only 6 dB/octave rolloff. (The crossover frequency is defined as the point where the level falls to -3 dB). Note that the subwoofer is attenuates (approximately) 10 dB which is standard since there is a lot of energy in bass and LFE signals. Obviously using BluRay and this receiver, you should use the multi-channel inputs. The Coax or optical can only handle 2-channel PCM or plain old Dolby Digital and DTS which are well over 10 year old formats. If you want to hear the high definition sound, you need to go analog or upgrade your receiv ..
Amp/Receiver/Speaker...strda3es volume control problemIf the volume is stuck at max, then I would suspect that the "DGND" signal (see pictures by nightmare) may be faulty (not connected). Check this. There may be a bad connection, cold solder joint, etc. at any point. Find where DGND connects to the pot and check that there is a low resistance between that leg of the pot and the chassis (powered off and unplugged please!).
Amp/Receiver/Speaker...strda3es volume control problemcan you adjust the volume manually, i.e. does the volume knob move, and if so, does it affect the volume setting?
Amp/Receiver/Speaker...Sony STR-VA333ES multichannel inputs (Jehill's preThe size (and therefore cutoff), surround position, and delay settings have no effect on the multi-channel inputs. All of those functions depend on digital processing in the DSPs. Only the level settings have any effect. There is an exception: if you have the center channel set to "mix" or "no" then the center channel signal will be mixed (in the analog domain) into the front left and right speaker outputs. The same goes for the subwoofer input. Only the Sony receviers with S-master Pro digital amplifiers can perform other processing (such as bass management and EQ) on the multi-chann ..
