    Hi,
I'm thinking of getting the DAV-S550 and have a TV that will accept SCART (RGB) and S-Video (but connector on the front of the set).

I've read a review saying the S550 picture is best using the component outputs...it also said that you can get a component to SCART cable if your display doesn't have the correct connectors and sort of implied that this would give you better quality than S-Video input.

Can any one advise me on this as I don't have component on the TV and don't want an S-video cable from the DVD sticking out of the front of the TV set! I'd also like the best quality picture I can get!!

    Many thanks

    Hi,

This thread may answer your question: http://www.agoraquest.com/viewtopic.php?topic=8420&forum=51

In a word, component to scart is not an option to you I am afraid.

If I was you I would get a good quality Scart Cable, something like a QED SQART or a THOR.

    Hope that helps.

    Dunc,
I'm afraid the DAVs isn't that good over here in Europe (Tort, how about updating your profile with a location?) as the S550 doesn't have a Scart output, but rather component, which is probably why Tort would like the conversion cable (which I don't think is possible). Really a shame how Sony crippled the DAV systems with no Scart...

What? no SCART (Read Euro Connector) are Sony mad?? Thats a real shame, although I think it is great to have component most people are tied to RGB Scart.

I am not sure in the logic here on Sonys thinking, most monitors that use component are £1500GBP upwards (at least on UK spec kit), IMHO a lot of people with a 550 (£250GBP) wouldn't be prepared or in a position to buy a £1500 monitor. Is component in on european TV more common than year?

Sony are either mad, hoping to sell most of these babies outside of Europe or IMHO overly confident about the capability of the S-Video interface.

Component in is definately rare on European TV sets (given that a RGB Scart connection is just as good quality-wise, I don't think it's going to change either)

I tried for 1 yr to have a Component to RGB Scart cable built and it couldnt be done.

    Stick to Svideo.

In order for you to convert a component YCbCr signal into RGB (Scart) you need a video format converter, for example Cypress Technology CYU-333 (www.cypress.com.tw).

The DAV-S550 has RCA connectors for component YCbCr video output and the CYU-333 has BNC input connectors, so you also need three RCA-to-BNC adaptors.

As far as I can tell this should work, as long as you have Component Out on the DAV-S550 set to Interlaced.

I haven't tested this setup myself yet, so try it at your own risk.

I've tried this sort of connection with the Sony DAVS550. Using a component to scart lead which costs around £20, and no it doesn't work. After numerous converstaions with Sony, is something to do with the conversions, the component sockets on the DAV series will only work with a component to component lead (for connection to those tv's that except them - mainly plasma).

Your best bet is to use a S-video to scart lead, as these work very well.

The connections isn't the problem. Not quiet apples and oranges, more like red delicious apples and green cooking apples.

    RGB Red Green and Blue

Component video Y, luminance and two colour difference signals, Cr & Cb.

YCrCb is apparently a simple mathematical translation of RGB that is better for storage (eg on DVD's). So if there is no component to RGB convertor/decoder in your TV, and none in your amp, the only option is to buy decoder (or use s-vid or composite). Which I think is a complete waste of cash compared to buying a better/more expensive model with these features already.

Of course I also bought the dav-s550 before finding this out
